2022 Chevrolet Camaro vs. C8 Corvette: Which Is Faster?

Chevrolet doesn’t sell many passenger cars in the U.S. anymore, but performance cars make up most of the remainder. And despite shrinking sales figures, the Chevrolet Camaro is still kicking in 2022. However, while the current Camaro is surprisingly sporty on non-straight roads, the C8 Corvette is a full-on mid-engine sports car. So, if you want the Bowtie brand to blow your doors off, which Chevy should you drive?
The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo and V6 can’t keep up with the 2022 C8 Corvette

Unfortunately, the 2022 Camaro Turbo and V6 aren’t available in track-ready 1LE form. But the most affordable—and efficient—Camaro trims aren’t exactly slow. The V6 model, for example, is more powerful and weighs over 300 pounds less than its fifth-gen predecessor. And with less weight over the nose than the SS models, the 2022 Camaro Turbo and V6 turn in more eagerly. Though it also helps that they’re over 200 pounds lighter than the SS models, Car and Driver notes.
However, both on paper and IRL, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo and V6 simply aren’t as fast as the 2022 C8 Corvette. Besides a significantly faster 0-60 mph time, the 2022 Corvette also has a faster 5-60 mph time than the Camaros. The C8 does it in 3.5 seconds while the stick-shift Camaro V6 and Turbo need 5.7 and 6.2 seconds, respectively, Car and Driver reports. Also, the 2022 Corvette runs the ¼-mile faster and finishes with a higher trap speed.

Although the C8 Corvette is one of the few V8-powered coupes for sale in 2022, it’s not the only Chevrolet one. If you want the latest version of the classic muscle car formula, look no further than the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 and SS. And while the C8’s LT2 is not the same as the Camaro’s LT1, the latter V8 is a Corvette engine. Specifically, a C7 Corvette engine.
Admittedly, the LT2 V8 is based on the LT1 but has a dry-sump oiling system and redesigned camshafts as well as a different intake manifold and exhauster headers. All that combined with the mid-engine position’s improved airflow explains the C8’s extra horsepower and torque, Car and Driver says. That position also moves mass rearward, boosting drive-wheel traction.
The extra traction together with more horsepower and less weight explains why the 2022 C8 Corvette is faster than the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro. And not just from 0-60 or in the ¼-mile, but in 5-60 tests, too. In addition, the C8 comes standard with launch control, which is optional on the Camaro SS.
What about the 2023 Camaro?
In short, at least without the aid of forced induction, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro isn’t as fast as the C8 Corvette. But that might change next year.
While the Camaro is getting an electric replacement, Chevy seemingly wants to send its muscle car out with a bang. Or rather, several bangs, because some claim the 2023 Camaro is getting the C8’s LT2 V8. As noted earlier, some of the C8’s horsepower and torque gains come from its position within the car. So, if the 2023 Camaro gets the LT2, it might not make quite as much horsepower.
Still, if those rumors are true, the Camaro and Corvette duel might have a different winner in 2023.
