If you’re shopping for a pick-up truck, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado and 2022 Toyota Tundra are wise options. Both trucks are around the same size and offer many of the same amenities; however, they are vastly different in their execution. I’ve had the chance to test out both pickup trucks recently. Here is a quick comparison between the two.

2022 Chevy Silverado High Country vs. 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone: Interior dimensions

Both of the truck examples that I drove were crew cab models, so they both had four doors and two rows of seats. The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country has a couple of inches more legroom than the Tundra and about an inch more in every direction. That means if you’re looking for a truck that can seat five adults comfortably, the Silverado is the one to get.

That doesn’t mean that the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone was small by any means. The Tundra offers plenty of head and legroom in both rows, and there’s even a panoramic to give the cabin an open-air feel.

Both models can be configured in a variety of bed and cab configurations. The Tundra offers  Double Cab and Crewmax configurations, while the Silverado has Regular, Double, and Crewmax configurations.

I would personally suggest the Chevy Silverado over the Tundra in this case, especially if you or your passengers are taller than six feet.

Chevrolet Silverado vs. Toyota Tundra: Towing and hauling

I didn’t get to tow or haul anything during my time with either of these trucks, but it’s worth noting their tow capacities. The Toyota Tundra offers a maximum tow rating of 12,000 pounds and is offered standard or long-bed configurations. The maximum payload for the Tundra is 1,940 pounds.

The Silverado offers up to 13,300 pounds of towing and up to 2,270 pounds of payload. It’s also offered in standard, long, and short-bed configurations.

As we can see, the Silverado is the clear winner if you’re looking to tow or haul anything heavy or large.

How much power does each pickup truck have?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra comes with a choice between a twin-turbo V6 and a new i-Force MAX hybrid system. I was able to experience the latter setup, which pairs an electric motor to a twin-turbo V6 engine and makes 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.

On the road, the hybrid system works seamlessly. The electric motor takes care of the low-speed cruising and idling, and the V6 kicks in when more power is needed. And while you might think that equates to a lot of fuel savings, it doesn’t. During my week with the Tundra Capstone, I averaged about 17 mpg in mixed driving situations.

The Silverado High Country, on the other hand, is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. On the road, the V8 engine provides Corvette-like acceleration and engine noises, which is nice to hear coming from a large truck. And while you might think that the gas-guzzling V8 would average around 10 mpg, it doesn’t.

I was able to squeeze an average of 15 mpg in combined driving during my time with it, which is only a 2 mpg deficit over the hybrid Tundra. In this case, I think the Silverado High Country wins out in the engine department.

Which pickup truck should you pick?

Considering both of the trucks I drove were the top trim levels, they were both equipped equally. I enjoyed the Tundra’s comfortable seats and luxurious interior. Its infotainment system was easy to use, and its amenities, like the heated steering wheel and ventilated/heated seats, came in handy.

The Silverado had a few fewer features, but it also costs less at $68,800 compared to the Tundra’s $77,339 price tag. In that case, if you’re looking for a stout pickup truck with plenty of room, towing power, and a variety of bed and cab configurations, I would recommend buying the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado over the Tundra.
