It makes sense that SUVs and trucks cost more to refuel than smaller vehicles. But this year, soaring gas prices have made the difference even starker. Consumer Reports recently calculated which passenger vehicles cost the most to fill up, and the 2022 Chevy Tahoe is one of them. Here’s how much you’d pay to gas up this Chevrolet model and whether it’s a good SUV overall. 

How much does it cost to gas up the 2022 Chevy Tahoe?

The Chevy Tahoe ranks among the vehicles that cost the most to gas up. Consumer Reports crunched the numbers and found that many on the list of 2022 models cost more than $100 to fill the tank.

But with a 24-gallon tank, the Tahoe takes around $99 to fill. However, it’s important to note that Consumer Reports based its calculations on the current national fuel price, which at the time was $4.12 per gallon. A full gas tank will take the Tahoe about 408 miles. 

When it comes to the most expensive vehicles to gas up, though, the Ford Expedition tops the list. But it holds 28 gallons and travels an impressive 453 miles per fill-up. Consumer Reports says it’ll take about $117 to fill the Expedition’s tank. 

The Toyota Sequoia doesn’t fare well at all. Its 26.4-gallon tank costs about $109 to fill up. However, it gets only about 396 miles on a full tank. 

Overview of the 2022 Tahoe

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe offers three engine options. The base is a 5.3-liter V8 producing 355 hp, paired with a 10-speed transmission.

In addition, this model year allows buyers to upgrade to a 6.2-liter V8 on trims other than the higher ones, as in the previous version. And consumers interested in a diesel engine can upgrade to a 3.0-liter Duramax. 

When you consider the Tahoe’s size, you’ll understand why its gas mileage is awful. The body is 211 inches long, and its wheelbase is 121 inches. This beast stands 76 inches tall, making it difficult to see pedestrians over the hood, CR explains. 

As for performance, the Tahoe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. In Consumer Reports road tests, the SUV didn’t fare well with braking and emergency handling. It took 145 feet to completely stop from 60 mph on dry pavement and 153 feet on wet surfaces. 

Consumer Reports’ 2022 Chevy Tahoe review

Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Chevy Tahoe an overall 39 out of 100. The two main reasons for its abysmal overall score are its poor fuel economy and questionable reliability. 

CR gave the 2022 Tahoe the lowest predicted reliability rating possible: 1 out of 5. That’s thanks to problems with previous models’ transmissions, engines, and climate systems. Repairs for this SUV aren’t cheap, either, especially because owners have complained about excessive oil consumption. 

The fuel economy also leaves much to be desired. Overall, the Tahoe gets only 17 mpg overall — 11 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The 2022 Ford Expedition gets slightly better gas mileage, with 19 mpg combined. 

Despite its faults, the Tahoe earned a decent predicted owner satisfaction rating of 3 out of 5 from Consumer Reports. 

Plus, the 2022 Chevy Tahoe has made some decent improvements over last year’s model, but not enough to impress CR, especially when it comes to the cost of refueling.
