Comparing a 2022 Dodge Challenger to a Toyota Camry sounds like an odd comparison, doesn’t it? It sure is. But considering the Challenger has one of the largest interiors in a muscle car, it only seemed right to compare it to a mid-size sedan. The Challenger is fairly comfortable for a coupe, but how does its back seat compare to the Camry’s?

How large is the 2022 Dodge Challenger’s back seat?

The 2022 Dodge Challenger’s back seat measures at:

  • Shoulder room — 53.8 inches
  • Headroom — 37.1 inches
  • Hip room 47.8 inches
  • Legroom — 33.1 inches

To get an idea of how much space that is, the Ford Mustang’s rear seat has 29.2 inches of leg room, 47.4 inches of hip room, 52.2 inches of shoulder room, and 34.8 inches of headroom. That means there are 1-3 more inches of space in nearly every measurement, which is a big difference.

By comparison, the 2022 Toyota Camry’s back seat measures:

  • Shoulder room – 55.7 inches
  • Headroom – 37.6 inches
  • Hip room – 54.6 inches
  • Legroom – 38 inches

By comparison, the Camry has 5 more inches of leg room, a little more shoulder room, and the same amount of headroom as the Challenger. However, the nearly 7 extra inches of hip room is the major difference, which I like due to the larger middle seat area.

Can a child’s seat fit in the back of a Dodge Challenger?

Yes! In fact, the 2022 Dodge Challenger can fit up to three car seats in its rear-seat area. According to Cars.com, “The Challenger accommodates car seats better than expected and even has room for three car seats across the back seat, plus an extra set of lower Latch anchors for the middle seat.” For their test, the editors at Cars.com tested three different styles of seats: a convertible seat, an infant-safety seat, and a booster seat.

How comfortable is the Challenger?

Considering we know that the Toyota Camry is fairly comfortable for a mid-size sedan, how does the Challenger stack up? The editors at Car and Driver noted that the “broad front seats are comfortable for cruising,” but the optional sport seats “don’t hug their occupants like those in the Camaro or Mustang do.”

In terms of visibility, the view from the front of the Challenger is decent for a muscle car. However, the rearward visibility is not that great. The narrow rear window and thick B and C-pillars make it hard to see when backing up.

The Dodge Challenger may be comfortable, but you can’t beat a midsize sedan

Ultimately, while the 2022 Dodge Challenger is a comfortable, fast, and practical muscle car, it’s hard to beat a real mid-size sedan as far as usable space. The Toyota Camry’s interior is a little larger in all the areas it counts and can also fit a few car seats in the rear-seat area. That being said, if you still want to haul around your kids in style, choose the Challenger.
