In the crowded subcompact SUV segment, there are many excellent choices to choose from. However, the 2022 Ford EcoSport is not one of them. MotorTrend ranked the tiny Ford SUV dead last out of 20 different vehicles. Why is the 2022 Ford EcoSport in last place?
MotorTrend ranked the 2022 Ford EcoSport in last place
For MotorTrend‘s rankings, it tests hundreds of vehicles yearly. Each one is assigned an overall score out of 10 total points. Each model is judged on its drive, interior space, efficiency, tech, value, and safety. For the subcompact SUV segment, these models need to have a bit of everything to reach the top of the charts. MT doesn’t just hand out good ratings.
However, the top-ranked model is the Subaru Crosstrek for 2022. With an overall score of 9.2/10, there isn’t much the publication dislikes. Following close behind are the two Kia models, the Soul, and Seltos. The class of vehicles consists of many popular models like the Ford Bronco Sport, Honda HR-V, and Mazda CX-30. Regardless of which one you choose, it’ll have a better review than the 2022 Ford EcoSport.
The Ford EcoSport is the worst subcompact SUV
What’s so bad about the 2022 Ford EcoSport? Firstly, MT gave it a 6.3/10 overall, far lower than most other models. The reviewer’s most significant gripes with it are poor value, low efficiency, and few safety features. Moreover, vehicles with many standard safety features, excellent features for the price, and excellent fuel economy are far better choices.
MT says even in its Sport form; the engine options are noisy and underpowered. With a starting price of $22,040 and an average of 23 city and 29 highway mpg, the EcoSport seems competitive. However, standard equipment just doesn’t live up to other models. Regardless of how competitive the price is, the Ford EcoSport isn’t worth the price of admission.
2022 Ford EcoSport standard features
The base model is a 2022 Ford EcoSport S. For such a low price; you’d expect a cheap, outdated, lacking interior inside the subcompact SUV. Well, you’d be right. Unlike more impressive, high-ranking models, the EcoSport fails to give owners enough bang for their buck. Unfortunately, at $22,040, you’re getting what you pay for, which isn’t a lot.
EcoSport S standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and locks, a six-speaker audio system, two USB ports, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The list of features grows extensively by choosing the next trim level, but it also jumps by nearly $6,000. Although the equipment is improved, it doesn’t fix the four-star safety rating or the 1.0-liter turbo three-cylinder engine making 123 horsepower. As a result, it earned its spot in last place.
It can’t hang with the best subcompact SUV
In comparison, the Ford EcoSport falls far short of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. Subaru’s offering starts slightly higher in price but provides way more out of the gate. For example, 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, automatic climate control, height-adjustable driver’s seat, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, one USB port, a four-speaker audio system, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Additionally, the build quality is excellent, with plenty of soft-touch surfaces making it feel more expensive. Additionally, it scored a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, which is perfect.
Avoid the last place 2022 Ford EcoSport
If you’re interested in a new subcompact SUV, it’s best to avoid buying the 2022 Ford EcoSport. Overall, the Ford model doesn’t provide much in terms of value. Although the cost isn’t high, it still feels like too much for the vehicle’s amount of equipment and quality. Additionally, it isn’t as safe as other models and looks and feels outdated. Since the best subcompact SUVs, like the Subaru Crosstrek, are just as affordable, the choice is a no-brainer.
