The 2022 Ford Edge is the kind of midsize SUV that has a great appeal to those looking for something a little smaller, simpler, and stable than many other SUVs on the market. And in most ways, it’s a great choice. It even has good safety ratings. Yet there’s one area where the 2022 Ford Edge comes up short, and it’s an important one. Here’s why the Edge’s headlights don’t meet the highest available standards, and why that’s important. 

The 2022 Ford Edge safety ratings are mostly good

Overall, the 2022 Ford Edge has good safety ratings. In fact, it has all good scores for crashworthiness, including the key categories of small overlap front on the driver and passenger side and the moderate overlap front test. In addition, the original side test, roof strength, and head restraints and seats scores are all good. If it weren’t for that one pesky headlight problem, the Ford Edge would be a really fantastic SUV. 

In addition, the Ford Edge’s safety systems have good ratings. Both the optional and standard front crash prevention: vehicle-to-vehicle are rated superior, which is the highest score they can get. The optional and standard front crash prevention: vehicle-to-pedestrian safety systems are rated advanced, which is the second-highest score they can receive. 

The Ford Edge’s headlights aren’t so great

Unfortunately, the Ford Edge’s headlights don’t get great ratings. There are two available headlights, depending on the trim level you buy. One is rated acceptable and the other is rated poor. This is important because the majority of fatal auto accidents happen at night, even though most people drive during the day. 

Acceptable headlights can be found on the Titanium trim equipped with 301A package and the ST trim equipped with 401A package. Poor headlights are on the SE trim, SEL trim, Titanium trim, and ST trim. This precludes the 2022 Ford Edge from winning the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award. 

The Edge is an IIHS Top Safety Pick

Overall, the 2022 Ford Edge has good enough safety ratings to earn it the title of IIHS Top Safety Pick. Unfortunately, it falls just short of the Top Safety Pick+ award thanks to its headlights. 

In order for a vehicle to win the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, it has to have good ratings in the small overlap front on the driver and passenger side and the moderate overlap front test. In addition, the original side test, roof strength, and head restraints and seats scores must have all good ratings. Any SUV or vehicle that wins the Top Safety Pick+ award must have standard advanced or superior safety systems and acceptable or good headlights available on all trim levels. 

The 2022 Ford Edge is a great SUV and it’s almost one of the safest that you can buy. It doesn’t quite make the Top Safety Pick+ list though, and that just might make you want to consider one of the other midsize SUVs on the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ list instead.
