The newly announced Timberline trim for the 2022 Ford Expedition adds an interesting off-roading capability to Ford’s large SUV. Off-road capable trims are commonplace for the 2022 model year. Automakers are adding features to models you’d never expect to see off-road. One of the more popular trim levels for any brand’s off-roading vehicles is surely Toyota’s Toyota Racing Development. The Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Camry, and Avalon all have optional TRD packages. These upgrades can add anything from better ground clearance to some graphics on the side of the vehicle. Can the new Ford Expedition Timberline compete with the likes of the TRD lineup? Here’s the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline vs. the 2022 Toyota Sequoia TDR Pro, and which is better for off-roading.

The refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition will have a brand new off-road trim called Timberline. It comes with a few different additional features to make sure your Expedition can go anywhere. The Timberline raises the Expedition off the ground giving it 10.6-inches of ground clearance. The 33-inch all-terrain tires also give it an approach angle of 28.5 degrees and a departure angle of 23.7 degrees. The underbody of the Expedition Timberline comes from the F-150 Raptor. It also has a wider track and it comes with a two-speed transfer case. That’s not the only other Ford model this Expedition borrows from. The Expedition Timberline also includes the Trail Turn Assist system from the Ford Bronco. The Trail Turn Assist system may be extremely useful with a vehicle of this size.

The Timberline has 18-inch wheels, an EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine, and 440 horsepower. The Timberline, not unlike any of Toyota’s TRD Pro models, will also receive special graphics around the vehicle. The grille is black, it has red accents on the interior and exterior, as well as heavy-duty front skid plates. The Expedition appears more sporty and adventurous thanks to the new look to match its off-road capability.

2022 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro

The TRD Pro trim of the Toyota Sequoia attempts to do the same as the Expedition Timberline. Taking the already spacious and luxurious SUV and making it off-road capable. For off-roading, the Sequoia has Rigid Industries LED fog lights, color-keyed grille, and mirrors, 18-inch TRD aluminum-alloy wheels, a TRD black roof rack, black cast aluminum running boards, a TRD skid plate, and that’s just on the exterior. Other convenient add ons you’ll find are TRD Pro front and rear TRD FOX shocks with piggyback reservoirs and Toyota Safety Sense. On the interior, you’ll get TRD Pro black leather-trimmed seats with red contrast stitching, as well as the standard Toyota Sequoia technology, plus some extras.

The Toyota Sequoia is expected to get a full redesign for the 2023 model year. While the Ford Expedition is new and fresh-faced now, the Sequoia may be quite soon. What new features and style changes come with it are to be seen, but we expect TRD off-roading extras to be included. As with the Tundra and other Toyota models, the TRD Pro is a highlighted trim and will continue to offer standout options.

Which is better for off-roading?

Which of the two is better for off-roading? Well, the Expedition Timberline has a higher ground clearance and about as many off-roading features as the Sequoia TRD Pro. To us, it comes down to the style you prefer and whether new and refreshed matters. The all-new Expedition Timberline gives a fresh take on the off-roading full-size SUV and has technology, space, and comfortability along with it. The Sequoia makes similar offers to its buyers but is on the verge of a total redesign. For that reason, we’d recommend waiting until the 2023 model year before pulling the trigger on a Toyota Sequoia. Comparing the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline vs. the 2022 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro, the Expedition is better for off-roading (and in general).
