For the past few months, it’s been all about the Ford Bronco, leaving the Ford Explorer as an underdog in comparison. However, the 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline is holding its own against the Bronco by attracting buyers as the more family-friendly option.

We aren’t saying the 2022 ford Explorer Timberline is better than the 2022 Ford Bronco, but both SUVs meet different needs of drivers. For example, the Explorer has a third row, allowing you to bring more kids, pets, family members, and friends along for the adventure.

Lee Newcombe, Ford Explorer Brand Manager, shared that data shows people are cross-shopping the Explorer Timberline and the Ford Bronco when considering recreational SUVs.

However, the Bronco fails to meet the needs of families when it comes to cargo space and towing capacity. Newcombe expects families to have both vehicles in the future. However, we were impressed by the cargo space the four-door Bronco has.

The Explorer provides 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats with up to 87.3 cubes total. The Bronco offers up to 52.27 cubic feet of space behind the second row with up to 82.97 cubes. That’s a lot of trunk space, but we guess it doesn’t beat having extra seats.

How much power does the Explorer have?

The Ford Explorer has a standard 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 3.3-liter V6 hybrid setup with an electric motor for 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque.

Also, the 3.0-liter V6 engine cranks out up to 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, depending on the trim level. The 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline comes with the 2.4-liter engine. The Explorer can tow up to 5,600 lbs.

The 2022 Ford Bronco comes with a standard 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with 275 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Using premium fuel increases these figures to 300 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque.

You can upgrade to the 2.7-liter V6 engine for 330 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, the Bronco can tow up to 3,500 lbs. The Bronco Raptor can tow up to 4,500 lbs and features 400 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque.

The four-door Bronco starts at $33,450, and the 2022 Explorer begins at about $34,010. Upgrading to the Explorer Timberline increases the price to $47,570.

Can the Explorer Timberline go off-roading?

Yes, the 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline is well-equipped for tackling the wild. Newcombe explained that it’s more than just an appearance package. It includes a raised suspension, Torsion limited-slip differential, and under-body protection.

It has a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, roll bars, enhanced dampers, revised front rebound springs, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Dueler A/T 3 Revo tires.

The Explorer Timberline has a better approach, break-over, and departure angle than other trim levels in the lineup. However, it can’t match the Bronco’s capabilities yet.

Just because it won’t follow the Bronco up a rock face in Moab doesn’t mean it isn’t capable. The Timberline is well-equipped for tackling the wild for family adventures.
