The Ford F-150 has consistently been one of the best-selling trucks in the country since its debut in 1975. Now, Ford is introducing the all-electric F-150 Lightning, and the automaker is betting on it to change the truck scene completely. If the thunderous buzz is any indication, it will. Because not only does it have a massive infotainment system, onboard power, and the ability to become a generator and power your home in the event of a power outage, it has a gigantic front trunk or frunk. 

The Ford F-150 Lightning is generating a lot of hype

The Ford F-150 hybrids have showcased how incredible the hybrid’s ability to function as a generator is by providing critical relief in the wake of Hurricane Ida. And the Lightning is debuting with an even higher amount of power available than the hybrid.

But that isn’t all that is getting people excited. The Lightning will come with a full-size spare tire and is one of the only electric trucks to do so. People are also excited because Ford appears to have stuck with the proven F-150 formula. Plus, they added what Ford calls the “Mega Power Frunk.”

For starters, it has a frunk

Business Insider provides a tour of the Lightning’s frunk, noting that you won’t find a frunk in any conventional truck. In the space where the engine would usually be, the Lightning has a lockable and completely weatherproof storage compartment that provides just over 14 cubic feet of cargo space, which is on par with the trunk of a Honda Civic.

Ford put a rubberized floor to keep cargo from moving around. The automaker also provided a helpful illustration on the underside of the hatch indicating the frunk can hold two golf bags, which BI confirmed. There are also multiple tie-downs and hooks to hang bags or other things on. 

And the frunk goes beyond storage with tons of useful, and cool, features

If you take out one of the panels on the floor of the frunk, it reveals another storage area, which can then be divided by using the floor panel that was removed. The same panel is reversible, and one side has spots to hold your drinks while the other is rubberized to match the rest of the floor. And thanks to a drain hole underneath that removable panel, the frunk is not only easy to clean but the smaller storage area can be filled with and be used as a cooler. 

The base trim has four 120-volt outlets, providing 2.4 kilowatts of power and USB and USB-C plugs. On the ceiling of the frunk are lights that can either illuminate your space or easily be turned off. There are also three ways to open and close the Lightning’s frunk, an exterior button, an app, or the infotainment touchscreen. And if you are a low-tech person, you can close it the old-fashioned way by pulling it down. 

Typically only seen in supercars and other high-end sports cars, the F-150 Lightning is likely the first truck to offer a frunk. And Ford has designed it with ease and functionality in mind. The entire grille area lifts, not just the hood, making loading and unloading super easy and convenient. Durability is critical with the Ford F-150, with zero carbon emissions, plus the ability to power your home during a power outage. Not to mention the nicest frunk of all.
