If you’re looking for a reliable EV pickup truck, Ford has just the vehicle for you. The company is rolling out an electric version of its uber-popular Ford F-150 – the Ford F-150 Lightning. Its inherent eco-consciousness aside, the F-150 Lightning has already garnered a lot of buzz for several reasons. Among its many excellent features is a massive frunk that has to be seen to be believed.

The all-new Ford F-150 Lightning

Ford has taken all of what works with the Ford F-150, electrified it, and enhanced it with the Lightning. The F-150 Lightning is a bit sleeker than the standard Ford F-150 and comes with a SuperCrew Cab and a 5.5-footbed. It’s powered by two motors, one in the front and one in the back, that are expected to help it hit 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds.

Its extended-range battery is also expected to cover 300 miles on one charge while helping to generate 563 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. (A standard battery provides the same torque but only 230 miles of coverage and 426 horsepower). With this powertrain and standard four-wheel drive (4WD), the F-150 Lightning will also be able to carry a max payload of 2,000 pounds and tow up to 10,000 pounds.

At a starting MSRP of $41,669, the Ford F-150 Lightning is relatively inexpensive compared to key competitors. For example, the GMC Hummer EV is expected to start at $112,595, while the Rivian R1T starts at nearly $70,000. Even the dual-motor version of the Tesla Cybertruck is expected to cost about $10,000 more than the base model Ford F-150 Lightning.

About that frunk

If you had to haul a ton of goods in your Ford F-150 Lightning, about 400 pounds of it could be placed in the frunk. There’s plenty of room: 14.1 cubic feet, to be exact, which is the same size or larger than the trunks of many sedans. Additionally, it’s not your garden-variety frunk, as per recent coverage from Business Insider. It’s lockable, of course, but also weatherproof – a feature that typically comes with an additional cost for other similar vehicles. Furthermore, it sports a rubberized floor to keep items from moving too much, along with hooks for bags and tie-downs.

Under the floor itself is another compartment for additional storage needs. The panel that covers it can be detached and placed into one of several slots to act as a divider between your cargo. This reversible panel also includes indentations to hold cups on one side. Additionally, a drain hole that you can use to rinse out the frunk effectively can also keep items in the lower cargo area cool.

Named the Mega Power Frunk by Ford, the compartment includes four 120 volt outlets and USB and USB-C outlets. There are even lights in the frunk’s ceiling to help you unload at night. As a bonus, you can open and close the frunk using the F-150’s touchscreen or exterior button, as well as through an app on your smartphone.

Other cool features of the Ford F-150 Lightning

Ford recently doubled production of the F-150 Lightning to meet demand. Given the popularity of the gas-powered F-150 model, it’s not hard to see why. However, beyond the Mega Power Frunk, press and company reports have revealed other cool F-150 Lightning features that are also likely driving interest.

Among these is the capability of a fully charged F-150 Lightning to serve as a backup generator, providing up to three days of electricity to an average-sized household that loses power. The Lightning’s batteries can be charged at home or a fast-charging DC station. The company estimates that such a station can bring an F-150 Lightning from 15% to 80% full in 44 minutes.

Standard features also include a 12-inch touchscreen, built-in navigation, and a WiFi Hotspot. The Lariat trim will also include eight speakers, while the Platinum will include 18 speakers. Both of these trims will also come with a 15-inch touchscreen for vehicle control and entertainment. So, while these variants’ prices will be more in line with those of Ford’s direct competitors, the Ford F-150 Lightning is ideally positioned to capture a large share of the pickup truck market.
