As electric pickup trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning emerge, so do performance concerns. Will cold weather impact the charging time? Will towing heavy loads destroy the truck’s range? Well, there’s no need to worry with the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

Is the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning good for towing?

Yes, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is an excellent truck for towing. It should be able to handle your load without any issues. When properly equipped, the Lightning can tow up to 10,000 lbs. This is pretty good, even though the gas-powered model can tow up to 14,000 lbs.

It’s true that with electric vehicles, the range can quickly be depleted depending on the road conditions and how much weight is being pulled. This might increase your range anxiety a little.

However, the Ford F-150 Lightning will help you relax by providing real-time updates based on your towing conditions. Reportedly, it can calculate the remaining vehicle range. This is a Ford-exclusive feature.

According to Muscle Cars and Trucks, the intelligent Range, FordPass Power My Trip, and the Onboard Scales work together to generate the most accurate calculations possible.

Also, the Trailer Profile stores the trailer specifications so the system can determine the energy use based on which trailer you’re using.

Hows does the Ford F-150 Lightning Intelligent Range feature work?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Intelligent Range feature works to reduce range anxiety by collecting data. The driver habits, traffic speed, ambient temperature, climate control use, route topography, and battery energy come into play.

Also, the system analyzes data from a cloud-synced system with other sources, such as other electric Ford trucks that have towed on similar roads with similar trailers.

This helps calculate a more accurate vehicle range for instant updates. The system can be enhanced over time thanks to the Ford Power-Up over-the-air software updates.

Plus, you can plan your trip in advance with the Ford Pass Power My Trip online mapping system.

Enter your trailer information to the Trailer Profile and destination into the Sync 4/4A navigation system. Then your towing route will be automatically provided with charging points included.

Does cold weather hurt the F-150 Lightning?

Some electric vehicles have a weaker range and slower charging times in cold weather. However, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning was tested in extreme weather conditions to ensure it can handle harsh winters.

Ford towed a 24-foot tandem-axle trailer in the snow while it was -2 out. Two inches of snow fell while the Ford F-150 lightning climbed a seven-degree angle over eight miles to reach 12,000 feet.

These conditions can be difficult for gas-powered trucks, and the Ford F-150 Lightning didn’t face any issues. The F-150 Lightning may have had about 128 miles of range left with over half the battery’s charge left.

Ford didn’t officially release how much range was lost during the test but seems pretty confident in their truck’s ability to fight the cold and maintain a substantial charge.

We will keep you updated with the Ford F-150’s towing capabilities as more trucks take to the wild. Until then, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel.
