Ford’s first two entries into the EV market are an electric version of the best-selling Ford F-150 pickup (the Ford F-150 Lightning) and the Mustang-inspired SUV (the Ford Mustang Mach-E). Both offer amazing innovation and high-tech style, but which Ford EV is better, and which is better suited to your driving lifestyle?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning: the EV version of Ford’s famous truck

With a base price of $41,669, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is one of Ford’s most powerful pickup trucks. Two electric motors and all-wheel drive are standard on all F-150 Lightning models. When equipped with the Standard-Range battery, the two motors produce 426 horsepower and a targeted EPA-estimated range of 230 miles. Models with the Extended-Range battery are rated for 563 horsepower with peak torque of 775-pound feet and offer an estimated 300 miles of range.  

Car and Driver reports the official towing capacity of the F-150 Lightning will be 7,700 pounds with the Standard-Range battery. It jumps up to 10,000 pounds with the Extended-Range battery. The roomy cabin has seating for five and an extra-large infotainment screen. As for charging, the Ford F-150 Lightning’s battery can be charged at home with 110-and 220-volt outlets. They can also get a full charge at public charging stations. 

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E: an electric muscle SUV

This EV from Ford is a compact SUV for a new future. It has an MSRP starting at $43,895. With a brand new look for a Mustang and zero emissions, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is focused on performance, launching from 0 to 50 mph in 4.8 seconds with the Extended-Range battery. Select, California Route 1, and Premium models have 290 horsepower with rear-wheel-drive and 346 horsepower with all-wheel drive. 

The GT  and GT Performance Edition trims are even faster and are rated for 480 horsepower. The GT trim produces 600 lb-ft of torque, while GT Performance Edition delivers 634 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E has seating for five and a good amount of cargo space for a compact SUV. According to Car and Driver, the Mustang Mach-E has 28 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 60 square feet with the seats folded down. It also has a front trunk (or “frunk”) with 4.7 cubic feet of wet/dry cargo space.

Which Ford is the better electric vehicle?

The decision on which EV from Ford is better comes down to personal choice. The first question to ask is whether you’re a truck fan and looking for power. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lighting offers pickup truck fans a high-tech version of an old favorite. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning EV can be put into service as a working truck with all the benefits of an EV. 

Drivers looking for plenty of power, as well as the practicality of a compact SUV, will lean toward the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E. Its sleek design is anything but a pickup truck, and it will appeal to those who love modern car models. When equipped with an Extended-Range battery and rear-wheel-drive, the Mustang Mach-E has an EPA estimated range of 303 miles, which makes the EVs just about equal when it comes to range. 

For towing capacity and maximum torque, the best choice in Ford v. Ford is obviously the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. For style, comfort, and 0 to 60 mph speed, look to the compact SUV, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E. Either choice brings drivers into the future in a big way, with high-tech, zero-emissions vehicles you can charge at home.
