The 2022 Ford Maverick Already Has an Irritating Recall
Wait, the 2022 Ford Maverick already has a recall? But the Ford Maverick just started rolling off the line! It seems a little early for this popular compact pickup truck to have a problem, but let’s see what’s going on with the leaking fuel tanks.
2022 Ford Maverick recall for fuel tank damage
Recall alert, the 2022 Ford Maverick is facing assembly issues. This isn’t exactly unheard of with Ford, as the 2021 Ford Bronco has trouble getting off the line due to hardtop roof problems. Plus, the Ford F-150 has been recently recalled due to issues with the radar cruise control module.
Anyways, while the Ford Maverick models were assembled, the drill holes may have been damaged during the installation of the spay-in bed liner. According to Torque News, this means that the Ford Maverick fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 301.
It fails to provide proper fuel tank integrity. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the damage caused to the fuel tank could cause it to leak, increasing the risk of fire.
What to do if your Ford Maverick is at risk
We’re pretty sure that you don’t want your 2022 Ford Maverick to burst into flames! Heck, you probably just got it! Luckily, this recall is limited to 5,456 models. This is an incredibly low number, but we’re not sure how many models have rolled off the assembly line.
Ford is currently unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the leaking fuel tanks. Owners are advised to wait for communications from Ford. Ford will begin notifying owners by January 28th.
If you don’t want to wait for an entire month to see if your Maverick is at risk, you can visit the NHTSA site here and enter your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The reference number for this recall is 21C35.

If your Maverick is at risk, you’ll need to take it in for service. Technicians will inspect the fuel tank for damage and replace it if necessary, free of charge.

Is the Maverick reliable?
The 2022 Ford Maverick already has a recall. Does this mean the truck isn’t reliable? It’s a little early to determine because this truck hasn’t been put through the paces yet. However, Consumer Reports gave it a predicted reliability rating of three out of five.
This is an average score that’s based on issues that previous owners have reported. But the Maverick doesn’t have any previous models yet. So, the score is based on other vehicles that it shared components with.
The Maverick shares a lot with the Ford Escape and Ford Bronco Sport, including the platform. The Ford Escape actually has a lower predicted reliability rating of two out of five. But we wouldn’t let this steer you away from the Maverick just yet. It still needs to be tested long-term.
