Wow, the 2022 Ford Maverick keeps on rolling out new surprises. Now the fully gasoline-powered Ford Maverick has a better fuel economy than expected. We already knew the hybrid powertrain would deliver outstanding results, but so does the more powerful engine option. 

2022 Ford Maverick has an excellent fuel economy 

The official fuel economy numbers for the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid aren’t in yet. But it’s expected to get 40 mpg. This makes the hybrid powertrain pretty attractive, even though it can’t be paired with all-wheel drive. 

But the EcoBoost engine’s numbers are in. Without AWD, the Maverick gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg on the highway and up to 30 mpg on the highway. Adding AWD reduces these figures by about one mph. 

There are reports from the Ford Maverick Truck club that suggest even better numbers. The Maverick has been arriving at some dealerships, allowing people to go for a spin. With the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, people are reportedly getting over 30 mpg. 

Some drivers are reporting getting higher than 34 mpg. Other people have been reporting about 37.4 mpg for the hybrid powertrain. That’s a little lower than expected, but again, the official numbers haven’t been released. 

How do the Maverick engines compare? 

With the 2022 Ford Maverick, the hybrid powertrain comes standard. It’s a 2.5-liter hybrid engine that generates 192 hp and 152 lb-ft of torque. You might be able to pair this powertrain option with AWD later. 

You can upgrade to the 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine for 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. This is a stout increase in power, making it worth it if you want to add all-wheel drive. 

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz comes with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It pumps out 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. 

While the Santa Cruz has more power, it also sips more fuel. With the standard engine, it gets 21 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. Adding AWD reduces these figures by about one mpg. The more powerful engine is rated at 19 mpg in the city and up to 27 mpg on the highway. 

How powerful is the Maverick? 

The standard 2022 Ford Maverick can tow up to 2,000 lbs. With the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and the 4k Tow Package, the Maverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs. It can also carry a payload of up to 1,500 lbs. 

With the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, you can tow up to 5,000 lbs and haul a payload of up to 1,906 lbs. So, the Santa Cruz does provide a little more muscle. 

You can equip the Maverick to tackle more off-roading challenges with the FX4 package. It adds all-terrain tires, a revised rear suspension, a higher-capacity radiator, and an enhanced cooling fan. The FX4 package also includes front tow hooks, skid plates, a hitch with a four-pin connector, off-roading driving modes, and hill-descent control.
