It’s no secret that the new Ford Maverick is tiny. It’s a compact truck, so that’s pretty much the whole point. But is the 2022 Ford Maverick simply too small? How much gear for hiking, camping, and trips can it hold?

How big is the 2022 Ford Maverick? 

The Ford Maverick is 199.7 inches long. The Ford Ranger, which is a midsize truck, is 210.8 inches long. So, the Maverick is about a foot shorter in length, cutting into passenger and cargo space, a little. 

Width is another interesting thing to consider. The Maverick is 72.6 inches wide, and the Ranger is 77.8 inches wide. So, in the midsize Ranger, there is a little more room between the passenger and driver. This might not matter for a personal vehicle, but during my week with the Maverick, I did bump elbows with passengers. 

The 2022 Ford Maverick provides 110.3 cubic feet of passenger space. The head and legroom in the front feel perfectly fine. It’s adequate for average-sized adults. Those who are taller at around 5’8” may want more room to stretch out. 

Also, the backseat is a little tight. You can fit two adults or three small kids back there. I’m 5’1,” and my knees hit the back of the seats in front of me if they weren’t pushed forward. A larger dog may feel cramped, but medium-sized dogs can fit comfortably. 

How much cargo space does the Ford Maverick have? 

The 2022 Ford Maverick has a measured box volume of 26.8 cubic feet. The Jeep Gladiator’s box is about 25.8 feet, and the Ford Ranger’s crew cab box is 30 cubic feet. The bed is on par with what rivals have to offer. 

The bed is 4.5 feet long, or 54 inches. With the tailgate down, it comes to about 6.5 feet long to 79 inches. It’s wide enough to hold 4×8-foot plywood sheets above the wheel housings when the tailgate is down. 

Plus, the four-foot-six-inch bed can carry up to 1,500 lbs of cargo. When properly equipped with the gas-powered engine and the towing package, the Maverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs. The standard Maverick can tow up to 2,000 lbs. The Ford Maverick can tow campers. There are smaller teardrop trailers that weigh between 850 – 1,100 lbs. 

Does the Maverick have good storage space? 

The 2022 Ford Maverick has innovative and clever storage space thanks to dividers that provide organization. There are tons of cubbies around the front seats for placing smaller items, and the center console is deeper than expected. However, the glove box and the seatbacks seem a little tight. 

It’s easy to flip up the rear seat to access storage cubbies on the floor. But the bins don’t lay flat, and laying an item flat across the floor might be tricky. Also, because space is limited, it might be best to plan ahead while packing. 

You can fit tents and bikes in the Maverick, but we would recommend packing light. It didn’t take long with a bike, tent, cooler, chairs, and a dog to make things crowded. I didn’t place clothes, food, sleeping pads, or tools in the cargo areas. 

So, the Ford Maverick provides adequate space for adventuring. If you want to go on a longer trip, it might be best to consider getting a roof rack for extra storage. You could put a shell on the bed too.
