If you’re interested in a midsize or compact pickup truck, you’ve probably seen the 2022 Ford Maverick. As one of the model’s highlights, most Maverick enthusiasts love its fuel economy. Cars.com has driven its 2022 Ford Maverick 2,000 miles during about four months of ownership. The website gave the compact truck its Best Pickup Truck of 2022 award, with its hybrid powertrain. Additionally, the publication documented its fuel economy since the beginning of ownership. For reference, they’ve filled the 13.8-gallon tank only six times over those four months. You may be able to calculate yourself, but that means Cars.com is getting a little over 400 miles per gas tank.

Furthermore, over 2,170.5 miles, the Maverick has been filled with 65.138 gallons of gas. In short, that’s just over 33 mpg, which isn’t quite as high as the EPA-estimated rating of 37 mpg combined. However, Cars.com says there have been times when it’s seen far better numbers while driving. For example, on their longest individual road trip spanning nearly 450 miles, the Ford pickup truck averaged 39 mpg.

Many factors change fuel economy

Obviously, a long highway road trip doesn’t require a lot of stops or starts. As a result, most vehicles would get better fuel economy than their EPA estimates. Regardless, it’s impressive for a pickup truck of any size to average over 30 mpg, let alone 39 mpg. Other things can impact fuel economy as well. One example Cars.com offered is the harsh winter months.

In comparison, the same reviewer said his Ford F-150 Limited Hybrid averages 20 mpg, which further proves the Maverick is a marvel. Additionally, they’ve noted the use of premium fuel, which is recommended in the owner’s manual. Ford says regular fuel will cause performance to suffer in warm temperatures and while towing.

More specifically, Cars.com spent an average of $5.43 per gallon to fill the Maverick. That’s 65.138 gallons at a total of $353.98 over four months and over 2,000 miles of driving. However, the reviewer thinks warm months will help the gas mileage climb even more.

2022 Ford Maverick: The most fuel-economic truck

Other top-ranked models, like the Honda Ridgeline and Ford Ranger, pale in comparison to the Maverick for fuel economy. Moreover, despite winning in other areas, the Maverick is dominant in this category. For example, the Ridgeline and Ranger get 20 mpg. In addition, the similarly-sized Hyundai Santa Cruz averaged 24 mpg combined, which is better than just about every other truck in the segment.

That’s why the Maverick is so popular. For the first time, customers can purchase an affordable pickup and get excellent fuel economy. Saving money at the dealership and gas pump was impossible if you wanted a pickup truck. However, the days of truck owners suffering from high gas prices are gone, thanks to the 2022 Ford Maverick.
