The 2022 Ford Maverick Has an Official Fuel Economy EPA Rating so Good, It Even Destroys Nearly Every Hybrid SUV
Finally, the 2022 Ford Maverick got its official EPA-estimated fuel economy rating, and it’s mind-blowing. The hybrid pickup truck from America’s favorite automaker has everyone buzzing. The affordable price, the cool features, the great look, it seems too good to be true. Surely even a hybrid pickup truck won’t be able to put out the kind of miles per gallon numbers Ford was claiming? Turns out, the Maverick really does get 42 mpg, which is even better than most hybrid SUVs.
2022 Ford Maverick fuel economy
Ford originally estimated the 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid would get 40 mpg in the city. That number seemed like a lot, even for a hybrid. It turns out, Ford underestimated its own vehicle. The Maverick hybrid’s official EPA estimate is 42 city mpg. The 37 combined mpg makes it not only at the top of its class, but others as well.
The standard, non-hybrid, version of the Maverick gets a combined 25-26 mpg. Quite a bit less than the hybrid version, though it’s still really good for its segment. For instance, the comparable-sized Honda Ridgeline averages 18 city and 24 highway mpg. It also starts at a price that makes you wonder if Ford is charging enough for the Maverick.
What kind of MPG do hybrid SUVs get?
Since SUVs are smaller and usually less powerful, we’d assume they’d get better gas mileage than any pickup truck. Especially the SUVs that offer a hybrid version. Even SUVs offered from Ford themselves don’t get the kind of fuel economy rating the Maverick has. That’s pretty remarkable in the grand scheme of things but makes you wonder why Ford hasn’t improved its SUV’s fuel economy.

Logically, you’d expect most of these hybrid vehicles to have the same or better gas mileage as the 2022 Ford Maverick. The truck is making a huge name for itself already, and it seems like there’s a good reason they’ll be sold out for a while. The first set of Mavericks will arrive for customers at the beginning of 2022.
2022 Ford Maverick powertrains
The 2022 Ford Maverick’s base powertrain is the hybrid option. All trims come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor for a combined 191-horsepower. Only front-wheel drive is available for this option, so you’ll need to get the optional powertrain for all-wheel-drive. The other option is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder nonhybrid producing 250-horsepower.
CarAndDriver estimated the nonhybrid option will hit 60 mph in roughly 6 seconds. The hybrid version is not quite as fast or fun as the standard engine. Though, the main focus of the hybrid powertrain was clearly fuel economy. The results are fantastic and it seems like Ford did well to outperform other brands in terms of gas mileage.
The 2022 Ford Maverick has an impressive fuel economy rating on its own. It becomes even more impressive when compared to smaller SUV hybrid models. Some hybrid SUVs come close, but many are far below the Ford Maverick in terms of fuel economy. There are even a few hybrid sedans that can’t quite reach Maverick status.
