Even cheaper versions of some models from other automakers now have standard push-button ignition. It wouldn’t be inherently weird for the base Canyon to be missing the feature, but it’s missing from the AT4 off-road model.

The Canyon AT4 is the third-highest trim level, coming in just under $40,000. That’s roughly $10,000 more than the base model Elevation Standard. Mainly, a person would opt for the AT4 over an Elevation or upper-trim Denali model because of its off-roading prowess. Every Canyon AT4 has unique 17-inch wheels, off-road tires, hill descent control, an off-road suspension, a transfer case shield, and heated front seats. However, it doesn’t come with push-button ignition.

How are the technology and connectivity found inside the 2022 GMC Canyon AT4? Viewing Motor1’s review, it’s clear that the midsize truck is lacking in this area. Moreover, the Canyon earned just a five out of 10 score for technology. M1 says it feels aged because of its “antiquated tech suite.” Unfortunately, the features most people would expect in modern vehicles don’t exist.

For example, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are unavailable. Next, the infotainment screen measures just eight inches. While that’s common for lower trim levels, a $40,000 or more midsize truck usually gets a bigger, better screen. M1 also noted that the user interface is outdated and uninteresting, making it feel old.

On the plus side, there’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability and Amazon Alexa support inside the Canyon AT4. Wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is also available, as is an optional wireless charging pad. M1 also calls the lack of push-button start and proximity entry “bewildering” for a $40,000 midsize truck in 2022. Despite missing technology, an outdated feel, and a lack of pizazz, the Canyon is focused on practicality and accomplishes that.

If you thought M1’s technology rating was bad, you haven’t seen anything yet. Moreover, the publication rated the 2022 GMC Canyon AT4 a one out of 10 for safety. First, the safety package costs $395 extra, adding forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and rear parking assist. However, many modern safety features are entirely unavailable. These include everyday items like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist.

M1 presumes the upcoming Canyon redesign will address the many issues caused by the outdated look and feel of the truck. As it sits, though, the Canyon falls far behind regarding safety features compared to other midsize models. Furthermore, the halogen projector headlights received the lowest possible score from IIHS. In addition, the NHTSA rated the Canyon four stars for crash testing and three stars for rollover.
