The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X is extremely expensive. It starts at $75,700. The off-road pickup truck uses a 6.2-liter V8 engine to make 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It achieves 14 miles per gallon in the city and 18 miles per gallon on the highway.
General Motors calls the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X ” the new peak of premium off-roading.” It features 16-way power front massaging seats wrapped in full grain leather. The off-road pickup truck includes one-pedal driving, a two-speed transfer case, and front and rear e-locking differentials.
It comes with Multimatic DSSV shocks and dampers, underbody skid plates, and a six-function MultiPro Tailgate. It has about 11 inches of ground clearance. The AT4X is packed with standard features, but is it truly worth over $75K?
Road Show by CNET praises the truck’s upscale interior materials, heated rear seats and steering wheel, and power sliding rear window. It also praised the AT4X’s humongous 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch gauge cluster, and 15-inch head-up display.
Is the Sierra 1500 AT4X the best truck in its segment?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X is far from the best vehicle in its segment. As far as full-size off-road pickup trucks go, the AT4X is a decent option at best. The best new full-size pickup truck for off-roading doesn’t even have an internal combustion engine. The 2022 Rivian R1T is the mightiest off-road vehicle on the market.
The base model R1T Explore makes a massive 600 horsepower. The 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition makes 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque. No other off-road pickup truck on the market produces as much power as the R1T.
Even the mighty Ram 1500 TRX and its Hellcat engine only make 702 horsepower. The TRX’s power is nothing to sneeze at, but the R1T is in a league of its own. It also has an adjustable air suspension that gets up to 14.5 inches for ground clearance. That’s an incredible amount of ground clearance, and it certainly comes in handy off-road.
The GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X is a capable off-road pickup truck, but its comfort features are the highlight of the vehicle. The AT4X just isn’t as powerful as other off-road trucks.
Skip the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X for an R1T electric truck
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X isn’t worth the money unless you’re looking for a luxury off-road truck. Ruggedness and opulence don’t always mesh well, and that’s precisely the case with the Sierra 1500 AT4X. It’s a great buy for that niche market but does little for drivers who are more concerned with performance than creature comforts.
