2022 GMC Sierra 1500 review highlights:
- 2022 GMC Sierra 1500: $35,400 – $83,000
- Best Resale Value – Kelley Blue Book
- Pros: Smooth ride, spacious interior, advanced tech
- Cons: Gets expensive in a hurry, Super Cruise is limited to the Denali trim, weak fuel economy
- MotorBiscuit Score: 8.1 out of 10
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is similar to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, only much more upscale with exclusive features such as the General Motors Super Cruise semi-autonomous hands-free tech. Plus, it takes luxury to the next step with the Denali trim.
For 2022, it gained the Denali Ulitmate package with posh upgrades such as open pore wood, leather-wrapped surfaces, and a suede headliner. The AT4X model debuted as the most rugged and capable Sierra ever.
Plus, it gained a revamped interior with a modern style and higher quality materials. The 13.4-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster are advanced and attractive. Plus, the Sierra 1500 is capable of plenty of powertrain options, including the 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax diesel engine.
Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim is best?
- 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Pro – $35,400
- GMC Sierra 1500 SLE – $46,225
- GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation – $47,895
- GMC Sierra 1500 SLT – $51,795

The GMC Sierra 1500 SLE trim adds plenty of luxurious and convenient features without an astronomical price increase. It includes the trailer hitch receiver, MultiPro tailgate, a rearview camera with trailer guidelines, and an automatic locking rear differential.
Plus, you get interior upgrades such as heated seats, keyless entry and ignition, 120-volt outlets, the 13.4-inch infotainment screen, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a power-adjustable front seat.
Moving up in trim levels provides access to the adaptive Denali suspension, ventilated seats, all-terrain tires, a wireless phone charging pad, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Bose audio system, tailgate-mounted speakers, and Super Cruise.
How does the GMC Sierra 1500 drive?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 delivers a smooth and powerful experience with plenty of power on tap. The standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder turbo delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 5.3-liter V8 for 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.
We drove a Denali Ulitmate model equipped with the 6.2-liter V8 engine that cranks out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Also, the 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine provides 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds, which is delightfully fast. The acceleration is peppy, and the 10-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth gear shifts. The brakes can seem a little soft at first, but it doesn’t take long to master their strong stopping power.
For a massive truck, the GMC Sierra is surprisingly agile. It has an excellent turning radius, responsive handling, and limited body roll. You can easily maneuver around tight areas with the help of the 360-degree camera system.
According to Edmunds, the ride is a bit rough and can’t match the quilt of the Ram 1500. However, our model has the adaptive Denali suspension, and it dampens impacts extremely well.
Can the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 go off-roading?
Yes, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is a stout off-roader. Our Denali Ultimate model featured 22-inch wheels and a two-speed transfer case. The Sierra never felt short on power for climbing over obstacles. It mastered mud and ruts without any fuss.
We are impressed by its ride quality over patches of rough rocks and uneven surfaces. It maintained a confident and stable composure while off-roading in the woods. We took it out in the rain, and the tires only slipped in red mud once.
It has a high-quality build and didn’t shake or rattle in areas that made the Toyota Tundra and Ford F-150 clatter pretty loudly. We were also to make three-point turns on narrow sections of trails in the forest.
Upgrading to the AT4 trim adds skid plates, all-terrain tires, tow hooks, a two-speed transfer case, a two-inch lift, hill-descent control, adjustable traction control, and an upgraded suspension with monotube shock absorbers.
The AT4X builds upon this with off-road specific adaptive dampers, electronic differentials, parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, trailer pre-wiring, a sunroof, a virtual rear mirror, and adaptive cruise control.
But the Sierra 1500 is thirsty. With the 6.2-liter V8 engine, it gets an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in the city and up to 20 mpg on the highway. But it has a large fuel tank and can travel over 400 miles on a single fill-up.
How comfortable is the GMC Sierra 1500?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is pretty comfortable thanks to its smooth ride and peaceful interior. However, our Denali Ultimate tester had extra soundproofing materials to block out wind and road noise.
With a hard acceleration, you can hear an occasional engine roar that’s very satisfying. The engine noise is kept to a minimum when the truck is idling. Having to turn off the engine at drive-throughs so people can hear your order is a thing of the past.
The front seats are large, with plenty of adjustment controls. Shorter people may want some lumbar adjustment. Also, the seats are a little stiff but work ergonomically. They keep you feeling alert and energized. But the massagers could be stronger.
You’ll find the back seat to be incredibly spacious as well. The seats are well-padded, and there is enough space for three adults to fit comfortably. The backrest doesn’t recline but sits at a relaxing angle.
The dual-zone automatic climate control system is impressive. It’s strong, fast, and effective. It seems to always set the perfect temperature based on the weather. We hardly needed to adjust the controls.
Does the 2022 Sierra have a nice interior?
Yes, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 has a premium, high-quality interior with a convenient layout. Everything you need is easily within reach. There are tons of buttons for the tech, camera modes, and driving modes that can be overwhelming until you take the time to learn about them.
The open-poor wood trim, leather-wrapped surfaces, and suede headliner provide a sense of luxury. The truck has an excellent craftsmanship that seems durable and far from cheap. The Denali coordinates are laser etched into the Paldo wood.
The Alpine Umber interior features topographical map inserts and attractive, pleated accent stitching. The full-grain leather is soft to the touch. Authentic aluminum trim and stainless steel speaker grilles complete the package.
Forward visibility is great. There are plenty of adjustment controls to help you see over the hood. But the sunroof is a bit small compared to rivals with panoramic options. Also, rear visibility is limited by a small window and rear headrests.
Does the GMC Sierra 1500 have good tech?
Yes, the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali is a tech lover’s dream. The 13.4-inch infotainment screen has crisp and clear graphics, and the system is very fast. It’s powered by Google with access to Google Assistant. Plus, you get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster provides crucial driver information, and the head-up display is massive. The systems could be a little more intuitive. It takes a few minutes to figure out how to adjust the settings.
But the head-up display can display a compass, the speed limit, how long it will take to pass others, and more. There are up to 15 different camera views, including an in-bed view and trailer hitch view.
You can opt for a wireless phone charging pad, 120-volt outlets in the cabin and bed, and a built-in tailgate Kicker audio system. You can connect to the system with an auxiliary cord, USB cord, or via Bluetooth.
On that note, we can’t forget about the 12-speaker Bose audio system. It has crisp and immersive sound with a wide range of adjustments.
We tested the Super Cruise system, and it’s effective at keeping a proper distance from other vehicles and adjusts your speed accordingly. It even changes lanes for you and waits until there’s ample space.
If you aren’t looking at the road, the system will ding and warn you. After three warnings, the system shuts off, and you must take over until you restart the engine.
How much Cargo Space does the GMC Sierra have?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 offers between 62.9 to 89.1 cubic feet of cargo space in the bed. It has more bed cargo room than its rivals. The short box is 5.8 feet long, the standard box is 6.6 feet long, and the long bed mazes out at over eight feet.
There is plenty of storage space and cubbies in the interior. The center console is massive, and the glove box is a pretty good size. There’s another cubby above the glove box, and a fairly sized storage tray is in front of the wireless phone charging pad.
You can access storage bins under the rear seats. Plus, the seats gold up against the wall. The load floor is almost completely flat in the back, with one minor bump. Also, there are cubbies built into the middle of the rear seats.
When properly equipped, the GMC Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,270 lbs. It comes the closest to matching the Ford F-150’s 14,000 lb towing compacity.
How safe is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is above average but isn’t the safest truck available. It received plenty of Good scores during crash simulations but got Acceptable, Poor, and Marginal ratings too.
The Marginal rating related to the structure and safety cage during the small overlap tests in the front passenger side. But it got a Superior rating for its ability to avoid collisions at 12 and 25 mph.
The headlights have a poor rating because they provide inadequate illumination and visibility around curves and to the left on straightaways. We noticed that the automatic headlights were a bit dim and slow to respond.
Also, the child seat anchors got a Marginal rating because the tether anchor is too deep in the seat, hard to find, and can be conducted with other equipment.
Standard safety features include:
- Forward collision warning
- automatic emergency braking
- Lane departure warning
- Lane-keeping assist
- Blind-spot warning
- Rear cross traffic alert
The safety systems are fast and effective without being intrusive. The seat gently vibrates if you get too close to the side of the road or start to exit your lane. The automatic emergency braking doesn’t have any loud beeps.
How reliable is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 has a slightly above-average reliability ranking from J.D. Power. It got a score of 84 out of 100. Anything between 91 – 100 is Great, while 81 to 90 is Good, and 70 to 80 is average.
You can expect the GMC Sierra 1500 to reach at least 250,000 miles with proper care and maintenance. It’s common to pass 200,000 miles before needing a significant repair. Also, some models surpass 300,000 miles, and there are even models with over 500,000 miles out there.
The Sierra can provide up to 20 years of service on the road. It costs about $727 to maintain the Sierra on an annual basis, while it costs an average of $936 to maintain full-size trucks yearly. So it’s a bit cheaper to care for.
The experts at MotorBiscuit give the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 a score of 8.1 out of 10
The MotorBiscuit editors award the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 with an overall score of 8.1 out of 10. The redesigned interior is extremely attractive, spacious, and comfortable, thanks to higher quality materials.
You can access plenty of advanced tech, but the systems aren’t the easiest to figure out. However, helpful manuals in the glovebox explain how to do different functions. The wireless phone charger is in an excellent location.
The Sierra 1500 has a smooth and comfortable ride with plenty of power. But our model with the adaptive Denali suspension may be more comfortable than the affordable trims. There are plenty of innovative storage solutions for your gear too.
We would like to see how the Denali Ulitmate compares to other trims, especially the beefy GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X model.
