After 30 years Jeep brought back one of its most iconic nameplates: Wagoneer. But, the Wagoneer comes in two versions, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. They’re the biggest Jeep vehicles available, and they join the hot-selling three-row SUV market. Jeep must have been tired of seeing Chevy, GMC and Cadillac as well as Ford, Lincoln and Toyota swoop up all the sales in the three-row segment and also recently released the Grand Cherokee L, which also has three rows. Jeep is taking a page out of the Ford or GM playbook with the Wagonner brothers: they’re the same but in the Grand Wagoneer vs. Wagoneer world, one is more “grand” than the other like the Yukon is a step above the Tahoe. But what makes the Grand Wagoneer more grand than the Wagoneer?

What are the differences between Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer?

The basics of the two are the same. They are large, full-sized, SUV. The Wagoneer comes with seating for eight standard. The Grand Wagoneer comes with captain’s chairs in the second row and seating for seven standard. They are body-on-frame SUVs, like other big three-row SUVs. Each gets its own powerful V8. The Wagoneer gets the 5.7-liter Hemi with the eTorque mild-hybrid system, while the Grand Wagoneer gets the 6.4-liter V8, and soon the turbocharged Hurricane inline-six.

The Wagoneer starts at $58,995, while the Grand Wagoneer starts at $88,640. For 2023 each will be available in an L version. The L versions add an extra seven inches to the overall wheelbase and a five-inch increase in the rear overhang.

2022 Grand Wagoneer vs. Wagonner on the inside

You can spot a Grand Wagoneer at a distance by its chrome trim around the windows and black roof. It also has LED lighting and a fancy grille. One of the big upgrades that Grand Wagoneer gets, beyond the standard four-wheel-drive system, is the air suspension that can lift it for off-road duty, or lower it for better highway aerodynamics and fuel economy.

However it’s in the interior that the Grand Wagoneer shines. There are screens everywhere. The front seat passenger gets one, there’s two in the center stack, and the driver’s cluster is a screen. Overall, Jeep says the Grand Wagoneer can have up to 75 inches of overall display area. The Grand Wagoneer also gets much nicer interior materials, four-zone climate control, and available McIntosh audio.

The regular Wagoneer doesn’t skimp on the goods

The Wagoneer is more basic than the Grand Wagoneer, but it still comes fully equipped. The Wagoneer comes standard as an eight-passenger SUV, however second-row captains are an option. Jeeps have always been proud of the their off-road capabilities and the Wagoneer offers three versions of Jeep’s 4×4 systems. The Wagoneer can tow more than the Grand Wagoneer, but the difference between 9,850 pounds and 10,000 pounds is pretty academic.

While it may not be a luxurious as the Grand Wagoneer, you still can get heated and ventilated front-row seats, tri-zone climate control, and power-folding third row seats. Inside it has the same mid-century-modern inspired cabin with wood and trim that would look right at home in a Frank Lloyd-Wright house or a modern furniture store.

Is the Grand Cherokee L the same as the Wagoneer?

While we focus on 2022 Grand Wagoneer vs. Wagoneer, both compete with the other seven-passenger Jeep SUV, the Grand Cherokee L. The Grand Cherokee has been the stalwart of the Jeep brand for decades. While it may seat 7, it’s designed to conquer the trails as much as the suburbs. For 2022, it features the 3.6-liter V6 with 290 horsepower or the 5.7-liter V8 with 357 horsepower. You can also order a hybrid version. The L is 11.4 inches longer and slightly wider than the Cherokee and that contributes to the 84.6 cubic feet of space available with the seats folded. It comes in trim levels. Grand Cherokees start at $38,720 and the L starts at about $43,000.
