If you’re looking for a mid-size sedan, then it’s hard to beat the tried-and-true Honda Accord. For the 2022 model year, the Accord comes in seven different trim levels. However, only one of them is labeled “Special Edition,” which may leave some prospective buyers wondering if it’s that much better than the regular Sport trim.

The 2022 Honda Accord Sport Special Edition adds to the Sport trim level

The Honda Accord Sport Special Edition joined the car’s trim level lineup for the 2021 model year. It effectively replaced the previous Accord EX 1.5-liter model and expanded on what the regular Sport trim level had to offer. Some of the most notable features include heated and leather front seats, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way power passenger seat, and a smart key with remote engine start.

According to Honda, this roster of premium features adds to what the Accord Sport 1.5-liter trim has. That’s quite the value, considering the Sport 1.5 already comes well-equipped with features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters, and an eight-speaker sound system. As far as looks go, the Accord Sport Special Edition has the same aesthetics as its non-special edition counterpart including a trunk-lid spoiler, 19-inch wheels, LED fog lights, and dark chrome trim pieces. Overall, it’s a more menacing look than the other Accord trim levels.

What’s under the hood of the Accord Sport Special Edition?

Powering the Accord Sport Special Edition is the same turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that you’ll find on the base LX and up to EX-L grades. The powerplant produces 192 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque from 1,600 to 5,000 rpm, so it has plenty of grunt when it comes to acceleration from a dead stop and onto the freeway. It’s also matched to a CVT automatic as no manual transmission is available.

According to MotorTrend, the Accord Sport equipped with this engine can get to 60 mph from a standstill in just 7.2 seconds, which is quicker than the 2022 Toyota Camry’s time of 7.5 seconds. We still wish that this special edition Accord was available with the larger and more potent turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.

That kind of power will get the car up to the same speed around a second faster, but even if you don’t care about 0-60 mph times, it’s nice to know that the power “feels” equivalent to the Accord V6 from the past, MotorTrend noted.

Is it worth it to buy a 2022 Accord Sport Special Edition?

Yes, if you’re thinking about buying the Accord Sport but want just a little more, the Special Edition is the one to get. Considering it has all of the creature comforts like heated leather seats and remote start, the Special Edition has what you need and not necessarily what you don’t. You’ll also get the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assist features, which can be a lifesaver at times literally.

As far as pricing goes, the Honda Accord Sport Special Edition carries an MSRP of $30,070 (before destination), which is in the middle of the pricing pack. The base Accord LX starts at around $26,120 while the top-trim Touring starts at $38,050. But if you don’t need all of the fixings that the higher trims have to offer (wireless Apple Carplay, head-up display, and ventilated seats), then the Sport Special Edition should suit you just fine.
