The much-awaited next generation of the Honda Civic is finally here. Now, we’re starting to get some more details regarding everything from pricing to trim levels. For now, we’ll focus on that pricing part of things. Recently, Honda announced that the 2022 Honda Civic hatch will cost around $1,900 more than the sedan.

However, is that extra dough worth it over the 2022 Honda Civic sedan? Turns out, some basic geometry says yes, and provides some answers on the price discrepancy.

The Civic hatchback is shaping up to be the better Civic flavor

First, I’ve got to disclose a little bias here. I personally believe that hatchbacks are the best way to get the most out of the sedan shape. With that in mind, it looks like the new Civic and its designers think so too. Honda certainly didn’t shy away from the practicality of the new hatch in their press releases.

Moreover, you’re not completely sold into the hatch shape if that’s not your thing. The new design, much like the old one, is a little more liftback than hatchback. That’s ok because images show that you’re still getting every last cubic foot of that hatchback practicality. If you’re really about the “purity of driving” then you’ll also be happy to hear you can have a manual transmission in your 2022 Honda Civic.

How much will the 2022 Honda Civic hatch cost?

Talking of options like the manual transmission, that brings us to cost. As myself and Car and Driver have said, the new Civic hatch is going to cost a hair more than the sedan. Personally, I chalk that up to materials costs. Hatches often require more materials to make than you would have to use in your average sedan. Expect the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback to start at $23,915 for the LX trim.

Compare that to the roughly $22,000 for the LX trim 2022 Civic sedan, and you’ve got your $1,000 to $1,900 price difference. Back to the geometry I was babbling about earlier. Quick maths shows that you’re getting 10 more cubic feet of storage in the hatch over the sedan, or, in plain numbers, it’s 25 cubic feet to the sedan’s 15. Based on the images above, all of that is going into vertical storage space, as the seats still fold down in the sedan.

Honda looks to have done all they can to keep the Civic cheap

Honestly, even if it were $2,500 I’d say the hatchback is worth it over the 2022 Honda Civic Sedan. You really can’t beat having that extra storage room. Having just switched from a hatchback to a traditional trunk, I do honestly miss the practicality. Plus, if you’re like me, I think you’ll agree the hatch looks far better than the sedan. Add in that manual transmission, and you’ve got something seriously tempting.
