However, there is a hangup for some with the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback. It is more expensive than its sedan counterpart. Thankfully, it’s not by much. The hatch will run you a whopping $1,900 more than the equivalent sedan at any trim level, spec for spec. That’s largely due to the increased materials used to make the car’s rear end larger.
Of course, the added practicality is hard to ignore, but more on that later. There’s a good number of trims available, and even some Civics with a manual transmission for you driving enthusiasts. While the stick may not manage staggering MPG like the 2022 Jetta will, it’s a rare option on a modern car. You even get your choice of engines with a stick hatch, from a 150 hp 2.0 four-cylinder to a 180 hp 1.5 turbocharged four-cylinder.

Back to practicality for a moment. Obviously, the larger boot is a welcome addition to the Civic line. It’s been a staple of the model for generations, and for good reason. That practicality, as well as the Civic’s $22,900 MSRP, are supposed to draw in young, first-time Civic buyers. As SavageGeese points out, it looks like it’s working. According to them, 25% of Civic sales are hatches, with 60% of those buyers aged under 35. Even better for Honda, 40% of those buyers are first-time owners. The Civic has always been a sales success, and it looks like the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback is continuing that trend for the brand.

To be fair, Honda has always been a “youthful” brand. Its marketing is targeted towards people under 35, and the brand’s sporty, youth-driven image is only helped by the resurgence of the Type R name for both Honda and Acura. However, the post-pandemic economy and its effect on younger generations could come back to bite Honda. However, as SavageGeese pointed out, the numbers are a reflection of just how good the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback is.
