The new 11th-generation Civic is generating a lot of chatter, and for good reason. After 50 years of Civics, Honda has learned a thing or two about what the people want. The latest generation looks great, drives great, and is still a relatively affordable entry-level car.

But, when the time comes to choose a new 2022 Civic, shoppers may feel overwhelmed with options—especially when trim levels sound similar. Today, we’re taking a look at the differences between the 2022 Civic Sport and the 2022 Civic Sport Touring.

The Sport and Sport Touring trims are different body styles

The most significant difference between the Civic Sport and Sport Touring, and the reason why it’s a little tricky to compare the two, is the body style. The Civic Sport is specifically a trim level on the new 2022 sedan. The Civic Sport Touring is specifically a trim level on the new 2022 hatchback. 

They both belong under the same Honda umbrella of the 11th-gen Civic, so it’s still a worthy and valid comparison. But note that everything here is somewhat apples to oranges. Or, maybe, red apples to green apples.

The Sport Touring has more cargo space and flexibility

We know that the 2022 Civic Sport Touring has pretty impressive cargo storage capabilities, but what are the specs? The hatchback model offers 25.4 cubic feet of cargo area behind the rear seats, with up to 46.3 cubic feet of total storage space with the rear seats folded. Errands? No problem in the Civic Sport Touring.

The 2022 Honda Civic Sport sedan offers only 14.4 cubic feet of cargo area in the trunk. That’s plenty for your average four-door driver, but if you’ve got your eye on something a little more flexible, the hatchback might be your best bet.

The Sport is more economical than the Sport Touring

Now that Americans face some of the highest gas prices in U.S. history, fuel economy is a bigger selling point than ever. The 2022 Honda Civic Sport sedan is slightly more fuel-efficient than the 2022 Civic Sport Touring hatchback. 

The new Civic Sport sees up to 30 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 33 mpg combined. With the Sport’s 12.4-gallon gas tank, you should be able to travel over 400 miles on a single tank. 

The new Civic Sport Touring sees up to 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, for a combined 31 mpg. Its 12.39-gallon gas tank and slightly lower combined fuel economy will only get roughly 385 miles per tank. The 2022 Civic Sport sedan comes standard with a suite of Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistance features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (the wired kind) are also standard equipment. The Civic Sport arrives armed with Honda’s basic 8-speaker sound system, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and premium touches like leather wrapping on the steering wheel and the shift knob.

• 180 horsepower / 177 lb-ft of torque

The 2022 Sport Touring hatchback also comes standard with the Honda Sensing suite. It bumps up its tech savvy with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a new Bose sound system. The Sport Touring’s higher price is reflected in standard heated front seats and leather trim on all seats. A one-touch power moonroof, dual-zone auto climate control system, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Civic Sport vs. Civic Sport Touring: which 2022 model is the best?

Again, this comparison is a little bit green apples to red apples. They’re both Civics. They’re both compacts. They both start under $30,000. They’re both almost guaranteed to last for 20 years if you choose to keep one that long. But, their differences are what separate the appeal. 

The 2022 Honda Civic Sport is a more affordable, more fuel-efficient entry-level compact sedan with some cool sporty finishes. The 2022 Honda Civic Sport Touring is a more premium, more powerful compact hatchback that offers more cargo space and more standard features.
