The 2022 Hummer EV is a highly anticipated vehicle, although 20 years ago, a “Hummer EV” would have been an oxymoron. General Motors is betting big on its new electric truck to bring the automaker back as a serious luxury segment competitor. We will soon find out if the Hummer EV will be a contender.

2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 pickup deliveries start in December 2021

According to Automotive News, General Motors said that it will begin deliveries of the 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 pick up to customers starting in December.

Duncan Aldred, VP of Buick and GMC global, said the Hummer EV Edition 1 will be the only version available to customers during the Hummer EV’s first year. The Edition 1 has a 329-mile range, can tow 7,500 lbs, and has a starting price of $112,595.

Aldred did not mention how many Edition 1 reservations were sold or how many will be produced.

“This really culminates what’s been an amazing journey of two years,” said Aldred. “It’s the fastest program GM has ever done from idea/inception to engineering it and delivering it into the hands of the customer.”

The Hummer EV already has strong competition

Despite Aldred’s comments that the Hummer EV is the fastest program GM has ever done, the electric truck is not the first to market. That title would go to the Rivian R1T.

The 2022 Hummer EV and Rivian R1T are going after similar affluent customers that are weekend warriors. Though, the R1T is smaller and has a lower starting MSRP at $67,500. The Hummer EV starts at $79,995. However, that base level trim of the Hummer EV will not be available for another year at least.

While the demographic is not exactly the same, the Hummer EV also faces competition from the Ford F-150 Lightning. Ford appears to be targeting the F-150 Lightning less toward adventurers and more to those looking for a traditional, practical truck experience.

The Ford F-150 Lightning’s starting MSRP is half that of the Hummer EV and, at the high end, can reach $90,500 for the Platinum trim.

The F-150 Lightning Platinum is not expected to hit the market until 2022, but it could be a strong competitor for the Hummer EV in the luxury segment, depending on its offerings.

Will the Cybertruck be a threat to the Hummer EV?

Of all the upcoming and recently released electric trucks, the Tesla Cybertruck is arguably the most anticipated.

Its Blade Runner-style techno-dystopian styling makes it one of the most polarizing cars on the internet. Just the way Elon Musk likes it. Musk has made many promises of what the Cybertruck will offer, but he has not promised a release date.

The Cybertruck was initially scheduled to deliver by the end of 2021. However, due to supply chain issues and the coronavirus pandemic, production won’t even start until 2022.

Will frustrated Cybertruck reservation holders jump ship to the 2022 Hummer EV or Ford F-150 Lightning? It is not likely but possible.

Hummer EV previews have been somewhat positive so far among tech personalities like Marquees Brownlee. However, Brownlee’s preview was with a prototype Hummer.

We speculate that reviews of the final production version should make the rounds shortly before the first deliveries begin.
