Even Though the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2022 Kia EV6 Are the Same, One Has a Better Driving Range
The all-new 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2022 Kia EV6 driving ranges are very different, despite sharing the same electric-global modular platform (E-GMP), among other things. This winter, the pair go on sale and are virtually the same vehicle with different names. Although both have a tremendous range per charge of over 300 miles, one takes the slight edge over the other. That is, as long as you go for the rear-wheel-drive, Long Range configurations.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 RWD driving range
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an electric driving range of 220 miles in rear-wheel drive, standard form. As a result, it also manages to get 110 MPGe combined with the same model using a 58.0-kWh battery. However, the standard model Ioniq 5 may not be available in the American market. As of now, only the Long Range version has appeared on Hyundai’s website.
Upgrading to the Long Range version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 gives it a 77.4-kWh battery. That battery ups the range to 303 miles in total. The Ioniq’s efficiency is increased from this swap. Keeping the RWD variant, it rises to 114 MPGe combined in its Long Range form.
2022 Kia EV6 RWD driving range
The 2022 Kia EV6 has an electric driving range of 232 miles in its RWD, standard range form. It one-ups the Ioniq 5’s 110 MPGe with its own 117 MPGe combined figure using the 58.0-kWh battery. If customers choose to upgrade to the Long Range version, it still beats the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The Long Range variant of the Kia EV6 gets 310 miles of range per charge. Its efficiency stays precisely the same in its Long Range form, as long as you stick with RWD. Opting for AWD will decrease efficiency, but it isn’t too drastic of a change.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2022 Kia EV6 AWD driving range
They’ll lose efficiency when both electric crossovers are in their AWD form. AWD is only available on Long-Range models, so these numbers don’t apply to the standard variant. Along with its 256 miles of total driving range, the Long Range Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD gets 98 combined city/highway MPGe.
The electric Kia EV6 doesn’t lose quite as much range in its AWD form. Switching to AWD earns the EV6 a 274-mile driving range and 105 combined city/highway MPGe. The two Hyundai-owned vehicles are very similar, but there’s a clear winner in MPGe and driving range.
Which one is better for long range driving?
The best option for driving long-range is the 2022 Kia EV6. While the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an excellent option and provides a great driving range, it is outdone by its corporate cousin. The Kia EV6 Long Range AWD offers all-wheel drive, a massive driving range, and excellent efficiency. For example, the Tesla Model Y beats it with its 330 miles of range, but what cost?
The 2022 Tesla Model Y starts at $58,990 for the base model, which gets 330 miles on a single charge. It is estimated that the 2022 Kia EV6 will cost somewhere in the range of $45,000. That makes it nearly $15,000 more affordable than Tesla’s offering, with almost the same efficiency.
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2022 Kia EV6 electric vehicles are excellent options. If driving range and efficiency are of concern to you, the EV6 is the better option. Make sure to ease that range anxiety with a vehicle that can go over 270 miles, even with AWD.
