The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Fails in 1 Major Way
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a new electric crossover from the Hyundai brand. It is similar to the Kia EV6 EV crossover, but it boasts a different design and some features that set it apart from its corporate cousin. But the Ioniq 5 and EV6 share one weird, and inconvenient similarity. One that could impact sales in places with winter conditions or frequent rainy weather. While it may not be a full-on dealbreaker, this lacked rear wiper is most certainly annoying.
What’s wrong with the Hyundai Ioniq 5?
Generally speaking, the Ionq 5 is a decent vehicle, but it lacks one key feature; a rear wiper. For some reason, Hyundai and Kia feel that this feature is not important enough to include, even as an option. And as noted by Consumer Reports and others, it can cause the rear window to become dirty quickly. If you live in a place with snow, rain, or even dusty roads, no rear wiper will likely become frustrating.
We are unsure why Hyundai left out the rear wiper. Plenty of vehicles with this design feature it blatantly or have found a way to hide the wiper for a more clean look. For over $40,000, surely these manufacturers could have done the same with the EV crossovers that are offered.
Is the 2022 Ioniq 5 a good EV?
Outside of the lack of a rear wiper, the Ioniq 5 is decent enough. It has stylish design and an array of modern features that add to comfort and convenience. Additionally, this EV has a range of up to 303 miles and offers up to 320 horsepower. Which should be ample electric performance and enough range to reduce range anxiety.
Better yet, if you are shopping for an EV with all-wheel drive, the 2022 Ioniq 5 does offer AWD. Because of this, the Ioniq 5 can function well in winter, if you can overlook the absence of a wiper for the rear window.
What is the Hyundai Ioniq 5?
The Ioniq 5 is a new EV crossover from the Hyundai brand. It does share some similarities with the 2022 Kia EV6, but its design is unique and slightly different. This model comes in three different trim levels and has a starting price of $43,650. Some Ioniq 5 models will sell north of $50,000.
It is also worth noting that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is not available in every state. It is currently extremely limited, so it may not be on every shopper’s radar. But, as more electric Ioniq 5 models enter the market, we expect it to gain in popularity.
Because the Ioniq 5 is an EV, it is eligible for a Federal Tax Rebate. This will aid in making this EV more affordable. Additionally, it comes with driver-assist features that will add to driver confidence. Better yet, this EV can reach a full charge in under seven hours and can gain up to 80% charge within 25 minutes depending on the charger. Even with this convenience, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 does not have a rear wiper.
