We get an exciting week with the new Hyundai Tucson XRT. While ‘XRT’ doesn’t actually stand for anything, it indicates that we have the rugged, off-roading trim. So, we’ve been off-roading to put the 2022 Hyundai Tucson XRT to the test, and it’s surprisingly capable without breaking the bank. 

How much does the 2022 Hyundai Tucson XRT cost? 

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson XRT price starts at $31,850, which is a bargain compared to similar off-roading models. For example, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road starts at around $36,915, and the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness begins at $37,695.

If you opt for the Tucson XRT, you can add all-wheel drive for $1,500. But it’s available in FWD if you don’t need it. Plus, you still get access to an exclusive look that inspires rugged confidence. 

You get 19-inch black wheels, black roof rails, extra black cladding on the wheel wells and sides, unique front and rear bumpers, a tow hitch, and side steps. The mirrors are designed in gloss black, and the windows have been darkened. 

How capable is the Tucson XRT? 

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson XRT comes with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.8 seconds. This is plenty of power for passing others on the highway. 

When properly equipped, the Tucson can tow up to 2,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,304 lbs. The Toyota RAV4 can tow up to 3,500 lbs, but 2,000 is still enough muscle to pull smaller campers. 

Over dirt and gravel trails through the woods, we were nervous about the ground clearance. The Tuscon XRT only has a ground clearance of 7.1-inches, but we didn’t scrape the bottom or bumpers while climbing over larger obstacles. 

The Tuscon features an AWD lock, which is helpful for getting through deeper mud puddles and climbing over obstructions. There’s plenty of power and torque on tap to get through light challenges. It powers over steep inclines without any fuss. 

You can also access downhill brake control for more confidence while traversing steep inclines. We hope to test the Snow Mode this winter. 

The Tucson has a relatively smooth ride on the trail, but rougher patches of rocks can rattle the interior. The Tuscon feels light, but well-planted around slippery curves. The tires never slid and provided excellent grip for cornering. 

Is the Tucson XRT comfortable? 

Yes, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson XRT is a comfortable SUV For adventuring. The ride is very smooth on the pavement, and larger impacts off-road are absorbed pretty well. Wind and road noise are kept at bay unless the pavement is rough or grooved. 

The cloth seats are large and supportive for people of all shapes and sizes. But they could use a little more padding for longer trips. Also, the dual-zone climate control works quickly and effectively. 

Plus, the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system is easy to use. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the wireless phone charging pad is in a convenient spot. 

The Hyundai Tucson XRT is a well-rounded, affordable option with plenty of capability, modern tech, and convenience features.
