Jeep has officially announced the first-ever plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee variant, the 4xe. This further moves the Jeep brand down the path toward completing its electrified mission of “Zero Emission Freedom”. The Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV will give buyers the same adventurous vehicle Jeep is known for while adding fuel economy and environmental friendliness. How does it stack up to the existing competition? The Honda CR-V Hybrid has now been around for a few years. What has Honda learned and implemented into the 2022 model, and is it better than the new 4xe? Here’s the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe vs. the 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
The Grand Cherokee’s first plug-in hybrid model has an estimated 25 miles of all-electric range and 57 MPGe. It’s able to produce up to 375 hp as well as 470 lb-ft of torque. The 4xe is able to tow up to 6,000 pounds, which is impressive for a hybrid SUV. The Grand Cherokee 4xe can change its powertrain for whichever trip the driver is taking. If your daily commute is within 25 miles, the 4xe can be used in all-electric mode. Save all your gas and recharge every night. If your place of employment is close enough to home, you might be able to never use gas going to work. If a long road trip is in order, you won’t want to deal with the stress of having that full electric charge. It’s easy to use gas only and keep that charge until you need it.
The Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trims have the 4xe propulsion system available. This system combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. It’ll also come equipped with a Quadra Trac II 4×4 system with a two-speed transfer case and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. The 4xe variant will have a 47.4:1 crawl ratio.
New features
The hybrid powertrain isn’t the only thing added to the Grand Cherokee for this new model year. It now comes with more space for cargo and passengers, as well as new innovative technology. Uconnect 5 with a segment-first front passenger screen, new high definition rear-seat entertainment system, and active driving assist are all included. The all-new exterior and interior design are complemented by the front passenger screen with Amazon Fire TV. The more than 110 advanced safety and security features include 360-degree surround view and night vision cameras.
2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid
The 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid comes standard with a 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle engine with an electric motor and e-CVT transmission. It averages a combined 38 MPGe and is capable of producing 212 hp. The towing capacity is only 1,500 pounds, which is significantly less than that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. We also don’t recommend taking this one offroad, as you’ll easily be able to with the Grand Cherokee 4xe.
The Honda CR-V is known for its roomy interior and vast safety technology, which is no different from the hybrid model. The cargo area is still spacious, but the hybrid battery does take up some of that space. The CR-V Hybrid has less cargo space available than the standard CR-V. Some of the interior technology could use updating. There have been no major changes made since the hybrid model was introduced in 2020. KBB describes the interior infotainment system as “frustrating”. The suite of Honda Sensing safety technology comes standard on all CR-V models, including the hybrid. The hybrid version does not have any major exterior design changes from the standard model.
The 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid is a serviceable small-family SUV. It’s fuel-efficient, roomy, and on the cheap side. However, there is virtually nothing new for the 2022 model year and it lacks offroading and towing capability. The new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe puts a whole new style on the classic SUV. It looks different and is finally extremely fuel-efficient. Some of the new features included make it a surprisingly luxurious vehicle. Plus with the extended all-electric range, you’ll be able to drive offroad in complete silence.
