2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer review highlights:

  • 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer ($87,845 – $104,845)
  • Official SUV of Texas and Best full-size Luxury SUV
  • Pros: Luxurious comfort, unmatched power, tons of off-roading capabilities, includes tons of value.
  • Cons: Not the best fuel economy, looks similar to the regular Wagoneer, no diesel or PHEV yet.

Guess who’s back, back again? It’s the Jeep Grand Wagoneer! The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer marks a new luxurious generation with innovative comfort and tech. A lot has changed since the Jeep Wagoneer was discontinued in 1991.

It was missing for 30 years, giving it plenty of time to incorporate advanced upgrades. But the Grand Wagoneer also stays true to its Jeep DNA with incredible off-roading capabilities. The Grand Wagoneer rides on a rugged ladder frame with an independent rear suspension to compete against the GMC Yukon Denali, Lincoln Navigator, and Cadillac Escalade.

Which 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trim is best?

There are four Jeep Grand Wagoneer trim levels to consider:

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series I – $87,845

While this entry-level price may seem high, the base model includes 4×4, the adaptive air suspension, retractable running boards, heated and ventilated seats with massagers, an integrated navigation system, the 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, and much more.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series II – $93,995

The Series II adds upgraded leather upholstery, traffic sign recognition, driver attention warning, 22-inch wheels, passenger-seat memory settings, etc.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Obsidian – $98,995

The Obsidian trim builds upon the Series II with a blacked-out roof, wheels, and piano-black accents. Extra features include ventilated second-row seats, the front console cooling box, a 23-speaker McIntosh sound system, a front passenger interactive display, and adjustable roof rail crossbars.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series III – $103,995

This is the cream of the crop with the 23-speaker McIntosh system, ventilated second-row seats, Amazon Fire TV, infrared night vision camera, rear-seat camera monitoring, enhanced adaptive cruise control, a digital rearview mirror, etc.

The Series II includes the most value among the entire lineup by adding features like the two-tone roof, 10.3-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, enhanced leather upholstery, and extra tech without going up too much in price.

How does the Jeep Grand Wagoneer drive?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has a 6.4-liter V7 engine that churns out 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and 4×4 is standard.

This beast can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds. There’s no power delay, and the Grand Wagoneer provides smooth transmission shifts. It has responsive handling and predictable, confident brakes. They aren’t too sharp or grabby.

The Grand Wagoneer incorporates a body-on-frame setup that’s based on the Ram 1500, but it uses an independent rear suspension instead of the truck’s solid axle. This provides a smoother ride and better handling than the Ram truck.

For being the biggest Jeep, the Grand Wagoneer is surprisingly agile. It has an excellent turning radius, making it easy to maneuver in tight city areas. Parking, making U-turns, three-points turns, and more feels effortless.

There isn’t much body roll around curves. The Grand Wagoneer provides plenty of grip for a stable performance. It doesn’t feel as large as it is.

But its hefty size and power contribute to the less than ideal fuel economy. It gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and up to 18 mpg on the highway. However, on a positive note, the fuel tank is massive.

It holds 26.5 gallons, providing you with a 344-mile range in the city and up to 477 miles on the highway. There’s nothing bad about having to make fewer stops at gas stations.

Can the Grand Wagoneer go off-roading?

Yes, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is well equipped for adventuring. The standard adaptive air suspension can lift its ride height by 3.6-inches and lower it by a half-inch. When raised, it provides 10 inches of ground clearance.

The air suspension automatically rises for specific settings. For example, it goes up when you select Snow mode. Then once you put it in park, the suspension automatically lowers.

Off-roading is made easy with the active two-speed transfer case with Selec-Speed Control. The system automatically shifts between tow-low end power options to provide more torque as needed. Speed is very controlled while climbing and descending hills.

The Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system includes a rear electronic limited-slip differential with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. Plus, it offers up to two feet of water-fording capability. The Selec-Terrain management system has Auto, Rock, Sand/Mud, Sport, and Snow modes.

When properly equipped, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 lbs. It provides the best-in-class maximum towing capacity. It can also carry a payload of up to 1,360 lbs.

Does the Grand Wagoneer have a nice interior?

Yes, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer takes luxury refinement to the next level with carefully picked high-quality materials to create a comfortable and inviting environment. American walnut appliques and authentic metal surfaces provide an upscale feeling.

Soft-touch surfaces offer a premium experience. There are leather-trimmed seats, door panels, and center consoles. You can opt for a suede-wrapped headliner and pillars.

The tri-pane moon roof allows the perfect amount of light to enter the cabin. There’s even a section over the third-row seats, which is a unique and elegant touch. The windshield provides tons of visibility, and the headrests can be folded down from the infotainment system if they get in the way.

The interior features a simple yet sophisticated layout without everything in reach. Despite having multiple screens, the design isn’t too cluttered. Overall, the interior is comfortable and well thought out.

Is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer comfortable?

Yes, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is exceptionally comfortable. The leather seats are massive, allowing people of all shapes and sizes to fit comfortably. With 24-way power-adjustable front seats, you can easily find the most comfortable driving position.

The seats are very supportive, and you can adjust the lumbar support, bolstering, thigh support, and more. Plus, the front rows have built-in massagers. On a cold day with the heated steering wheel, heated seats, and a massage going, you might not want to exit the vehicle.

You can opt for heated and ventilated seats and the first and second rows. There are four-zone automatic climate control works quickly to keep everyone comfortable. If you hit remote start, the system automatically adjusts to the perfect temperatures based on the weather outside.

The second-row seats are large and supportive, with plenty of leg-room. The third row is spacious and comfortable as well, but taller people may want a little more legroom back there.

Keep in mind that the Grand Wagoneer is well-equipped to go off-roading. This means that rivals may have a smoother ride. However, it feels composed over bumps and absorbs impacts well. It doesn’t shake or jitter over larger road imperfections.

The interior might be slightly louder as well, but the road and wind noise isn’t distracting at high speeds. The cab remains relativity peaceful and quiet. Also, when you accelerate, the Grand Wagoneer provides delightful engine roars. It has one of the better-sounding engines out there.

Does the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer have good tech?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is loaded with advanced features! The 12.0-inch center touch screen uses the new Uconnect 5 infotainment software. The graphics and speed are noticeably upgraded.

You can easily customize the digital gauge cluster to display the information you want, including off-roading stats such as your pitch and roll. The head-up display features your speed, the speed limit, lane-centering information, and the name of the street you’re on.

There is an optional 10.3-inch touchscreen for the passenger and a rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 10.1-inch touchscreens. The rear also has an HVAC control system for passengers in the second row.

The auto-dimming rearview mirror provides excellent visibility, and there is an optional camera that displays the rear seats, allowing you to keep an eye on the kiddos.

We were impressed by the 360-degree surround-view camera system and parking sensors. It shows you what’s around the vehicle to simplify getting in and out of tight spaces.

Also, the front-facing camera displays obstacles in front of you on the trails. It was handy while driving in the snow because we could see where icy patches were.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard along with a wireless charging pad. There are multiple USB and USB-C ports in each row. Plus, two 120-Volt household outlets are included.

The infrared camera system displays a view of the road in the digital gauge cluster if it detects an animal or person close by. Also, you can opt for a cooler in the front center console to get your beverages and snacks chilled.

There are multiple apps, allowing you to customize your experience. You can even select two different colors for the ambient lighting system. The Wagoneer app displays vehicle health information, can make appointments, and puts everything in one convenient place.

You can opt for Amazon Fire TV that works with the Wi-fi system to keep passengers entertained during trips. Plus, the McIntosh stereo system delivers crisp and immersive sound. It might take the cake away from Ford’s Bang & Olufsen stereo.

Is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer spacious?

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer provides more passenger space than the Cadillac Escalade and more cargo space than the Lincoln Navigator. There are up to 27.4 cubic feet behind the third-row seats and up to 94.2 cubes total.

Some items may not lay completely flat due to the center console that sticks up in the second row. Lowering the suspension allows you to simplify loading items thanks to the lowered liftover height.

There are plenty of places to store smaller items, but the glove box is a bit shallow. The door pockets and seat pouches are a little confining too. However, the center consoles in the front and second-row are massive.

Plus, there’s plenty of space between each row, allowing you to easily install child seats. The power-folding third-row can be controlled from the second row and the very back. Also, the power-folding seats in the second row can be controlled from the back.

How reliable is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer?

It’s a little early to determine how reliable the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be. It just came out and needs to be put through the paces. However, Consumer Reports suggests it will have a lower than average reliability rating based on similar models with the same powertrain.

Consumer Reports hasn’t tested the Jeep Grand Wagoneer yet and doesn’t have any detailed information about potential problems.

The model we tested had about 12,000 miles on it and seemed to be in perfect condition. The build quality is luxurious yet durable, and the Wagoneer wasn’t making any strange noises. It seems well crafted.

It costs about $521 to maintain the Jeep Grand Wagoneer on an annual basis. This is great, considering that the average maintenance cost for SUVs is about $634. However, maintenance costs vary depending on age, mileage, location, and shop.

Is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer safe?

Unfortunately, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer hasn’t been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) yet. But we will update this section when the results are published.

Standard safety features include:

  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Head-up display
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automated parking
  • 360-degree surround-view system

MotorBiscuit gives the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer an expert rating of 9.1 out of 10

The MotorBiscuit experts have awarded the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with an official rating of 9.1 out of 10. While the entry-level price may be high, the Grand Wagoneer includes plenty of standard features for comfort and capability. It provides extra value that rivals lack.

Sure, the fuel economy isn’t great. But that doesn’t stick out as a significant issue while enjoying the Grand Wagoneer’s stout acceleration and engaging ride. Rivals might have a smoother ride and quieter experience, but they aren’t built for off-roading. Plus, it can tow up to 10,000 lbs.

The Grand Wagoneer features a luxuriously crafted interior with new innovative tech to keep drivers and passengers comfortable and entertained. If you miss the wood paneling on the exterior, you can find pops of genuine walnut in the interior.
