The 2022 Ford Expedition sales are down. But over at Jeep, 2022 Jeep Wagoneer sales are way up. By the numbers, it looks like buyers are skipping Ford’s top full-size SUV and stepping into the Grand Wagoneer. What’s going on? Could it be that the fourth generation of the Expedition is getting a bit long in the tooth compared to the new-for-2022 Grand Wagoneer that is trading on some serious nostalgia? Or could it be that the Wagoneer offers the same capability for about $10,000 less?

There’s momentum building for the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer sales

The new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer came to the market red hot. Many 80s babies fondly remember, and miss, the original big SUV, even if the originals had slippery vinyl seats, dumpy radios, and underpowered engines. The new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoner are inspired by the uber-hip original, right down to the available inline-six-cylinder engines.

Maybe it’s also because Jeep is offering a $3,000 bonus for anyone trading in another brand’s SUV for a new Wagoneer. Whatever it is, Jeep’s sales are growing, especially compared to the Expeditions; according to GoodCarBadCar, which tracks sales, Jeep sold 7,056 Wagoneers in the first quarter, while Ford sold 9,718 Expeditions. While those sound like fine numbers, in the same quarter of 2021, Ford sold 2.5 times as many Expeditions.

Is Ford going to redesign the Expedition?

Ford slightly updated the Expedition in 2022, but its bones go back to 2019. The Expedition is Ford’s biggest SUV and holds eight passengers in its spacious cabin. The body-on-frame 2022 Expedition is based on the F-150 trucks and that capability (and size) is reflected in the Expedition. It can tow up to 15,300 pounds with an available package, for example. It comes with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that makes 380 horsepower.

The 2022 Ford Expedition comes in seven versions. Like in the F-150, you can order it as an XL, STX, XLT, King Ranch, Limited and Platinum versions, starting at about $70,000. New for 2022 however is the Timberline version. the new Timberline package adds some F-150 Raptor goodies to get the off-road party started in this massive seven- or eight-passenger SUV.

For 2022 Ford added special editions to the Expedition

From the Raptor, the new Timberline edition gets the 440-horsepower V6, 10-speed transmission, and skid plates. From the Bronco, the new package gets some off-road tech that helps it navigate tighter trails.T he Timberline has that truck’s heavy-duty underbody skid plate. It also adds a new suspension, and Trail Turn Assist from the Bronco, which will brake the inside wheels in the dirt to help the big Expedition make tighter turns. Even with that assist, the Timberline is too big to thread tight trails. It comes with the same twin-turbo 2.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine as the Raptor.

But is that enough to compete with the new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer?

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer sales are up, and that could be because it starts at $58,995 and has much of the capability of the Expedition. The 2022 Wagoneer comes standard as an eight-passenger SUV, however, second-row captains are an option. Jeeps have always been proud of their off-road capabilities and the Wagoneer offers three versions of Jeep’s 4×4 systems. The Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 pounds.

While it may not be as luxurious as the more expensive 2022 Grand Wagoneer, you still can get heated and ventilated front-row seats, tri-zone climate control, and power-folding third-row seats. Inside it has the same mid-century-modern-inspired cabin with wood and trim that would look right at home in a Frank Lloyd-Wright house or a modern furniture store.
