2022 Jeep Wrangler Tipped Over During IIHS Crash Test Again
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is still having trouble with a new crashworthiness test from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). After the Jeep SUV missed a high score for the same test in 2019, how hasn’t the automaker remedied the issue? The 2022 Jeep Wrangler price starts at $29,995, but is it safe enough? According to the IIHS, the vehicle performed well in some tests but fell short in others.
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler received mixed reviews from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
The IIHS has been hard at work testing the new model year vehicles. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is one of those vehicles, and it seems to have gotten caught up in the latest safety test. Back in 2019, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler also had a hard time with this test. Dubbed the “front small-overlap” test, this tests the vehicle’s ability to stay on the ground during a front impact.
In 2019, the Jeep SUV flipped over from the collision. This is a pretty big safety issue with a convertible like the Wrangler. However, the IIHS hoped the sport utility vehicle would have worked things out in the meantime.
During testing this week, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler again flipped over during this part. Whatever modifications Jeep made behind the scenes did not fix the problem.
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler received an overall score of marginal on the IIHS evaluation
The 2022 Jeep received a marginal score for the overall evaluation. The areas of structure/safety cage and driver injury measures received good scores.
“A vehicle tipping onto its side is not an acceptable outcome for a frontal crash and, as a result, the Wrangler’s overall rating was downgraded to marginal.”

“The partial rollover presents an additional injury risk beyond what the standard crash test criteria are intended to measure,” the IIHS noted. The safety organization also indicated that Jeep changed the 2022 Wrangler to prevent tipping over during this part of the test, but these changes were not enough.
Unfortunately for Jeep, the Wrangler SUV received a mixed bag of reviews. Some areas received scores of “poor,” which is the lowest score possible. The headlights on certain trim levels received such scores, as did the lower leg portion of the driver injury section. The next score up from poor is marginal.
Another newly redesigned test, the side impact test, also tripped up the Wrangler. The sport utility vehicle also received a marginal score on this part of the test.
The Jeep sport utility vehicle performed well in other tests
On some of the other tests, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler received a lot of good scores. The Jeep received good scores on the moderate overlap front test, the original side test, and the head restraint/seat section. The Wrangler also received a “superior” score on the vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention test.
Unfortunately, the 2022 Wrangler won’t be eligible for the Top Safety Pick as it requires a “good” rating in this crash test. Jeep has some work to do on the Wrangler before it is deemed a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
