The 2022 Kia Forte was due for a refresh. Not necessarily because of the way it drives, which, but the way, is fantastic. No, it’s because the looks weren’t quite up to snuff. Now, that’s all changed. Just like the Telluride before it, the new Forte ditches the old circular badge in favor of a new one befitting the brand’s new image.

Can the new Forte continue to drive Kia forward? It’s possible, sure, and the addition of Kia’s GT trim certainly isn’t going to hurt the small sedan’s chances.

There will be a Forte GT

It’s not just the 2022 Kia Forte base model that’s getting the refresh. The Forte GT is also getting a shiny new look for 2022. Of course, that immediately brings the Forte’s existing manual transmission into question. Thankfully, Kia has decided to keep the stick for the 2022 Kia Forte GT. It’s one of the few sedans in this segment to have it.

Of course, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI comes to mind, but there really aren’t a lot of small, cheap, stick sedans left. Things keep getting better with the GT, which also brings in the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen. It’s optional on the base model, but the Forte GT is anything but a base model. Both will also bring a host of new features for consumers, and to fight the competition with.

How much will a 2022 Kia Forte cost?

Obviously, that also brings in the question of cost. The 2021 model was a fantastic bargain option, and right now we can expect the 2022 Kia Forte to continue the trend. Unfortunately, Kia’s press materials don’t mention pricing for the new model. Currently, you can get a base Forte from $17,890, with the GT starting at $22,790. Given the host of minor changes, we expect a minor price increase to match. Expect right around $18,000 and $23,000 for the base and GT Forte models respectively.

Per usual with Kia, you’re getting what you pay for (which is a lot), especially in the safety department. Kia was keen to emphasise six standard safety systems like Highway Driving Assist (think: Ford’s BlueCruise) and Forward Collision Warning. Kia also says it’ll be offering lane-keep and other programs as well.

The new sedan from Kia faces stiff competition

That’s all well and good for the new 2022 Kia Forte and Forte GT, but both models face stiff competition. We already discussed the GLI as a competitor to the Forte GT, but it’s important not to forget the Golf GTI as well. Both VW products will be offered at a more premium price point that Kia is definitely looking to undercut.

However, too much of an undercut will a cheap car make. Ideally, Kia will be able to strike the balance between a cheap car and a premium feel. So far, the brand’s track record there is strong thanks to vehicles like the Telluride. For now, it remains to be seen if the refreshed Forte can manage the same trick.
