Bad news emerged recently for 2022 Kia Telluride owners. There’s already a safety recall on the SUV. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first recent recall on the Telluride. Read on to learn more about the trouble spots that have Telluride owners taking the cars back to the dealer for fixes. 

The 2022 Kia Telluride has a faulty LCD display

There’s a pretty big issue with more than 5,000 2022 Kia Tellurides that’s causing headaches for their owners: Consumer Reports tells us that the Telluride’s LCD display may remain blank even after the vehicle starts up. This means that drivers can lack crucial information, such as the digital speedometer, gear selection indicator, and odometer. Vehicles that don’t provide this information fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, “Control and Displays.” Not to mention that they increase the potential for a crash. 

As part of this recall, owners who need to get their Telluride LCD displays repaired may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC215. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov. A Kia dealer can update the instrument cluster’s software to display correctly. 

Recalls on Tellurides have been common recently

We only need to look back a year or two to find other examples of Tellurides that have had mechanical problems surface. Some of these problems even led to recalls as well.

First, back in 2020, The Brake Report noted that Kia recalled around 87,000 Tellurides with Smart Cruise Control because the system wouldn’t activate a connected trailer’s brake lights when automatic braking was engaged. That could potentially result in an accident if a trailing vehicle didn’t realize the Telluride and trailer were slowing down due to the lack of brake lights. The manufacturer installed a new wire harness in the affected vehicles. 

Then, in 2021, Kia recalled certain Tellurides due to a problem with the Occupant Classification and Detection System (OCS/ODS) unit. The unit could potentially not detect the presence of a child restraint system in the front passenger seat, which could result in injury to a child should the vehicle’s airbag deploy. This recall was more limited in scope than the 2020 recall. In all, it only affected 142 vehicles.

The 2022 Telluride is a mid-size SUV with a 3.8L V6 engine and 291 hp. It also has a 5,000 lb towing capacity.

With three-row seating, the Telluride can accommodate up to eight passengers. Auto-front and rear climate control keep all passengers comfortable, and one-touch sliding and folding second-row seats make it easy for everyone to get in and out of the vehicle. 

Telluride’s driver-assist technology helps enhance safety in many ways. For example, its Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist can slow the vehicle down automatically to avoid a crash, while lane-keeping assist helps prevent dangerous deviations from the vehicle’s lane. In addition, its Parking Distance Warning-Reverse (PDW-R) uses a sensor system to detect obstacles behind your vehicle and warn you of their presence. 

Then there are the features that are more about convenience than safety. These include the smart key with push-button and remote start, making it easy to get on the road in almost no time. What’s more, the USB ports in the 2022 Telluride are abundant. With six of them in the vehicle, there are plenty to go around for you and your passengers. 

All in all, the Kia Telluride has faced challenges. However, it’s got a lot going for it, especially for an SUV at its price point.
