If you’re looking for a small crossover that’s hatchback-sized, then there are a few to choose from. Two prime examples are the 2022 Lexus UX 200 and the Toyota CH-R. Both cars are based on the same chassis, however, one is more luxurious than the other. Which one should you choose? Here is a short real-world comparison between these cars based on my time spent with them.

The 2022 Toyota CH-R can bring out your funky side

While there’s no denying that the 2022 Lexus UX 200 looks unique with a hint of sophistication, the 2022 Toyota CH-R has a funky side to it. Its broad fenders, c-shaped taillights, and rear wing make it look sporty. And let’s not forget about its rear doors with their high beltline and vertical door handles. In comparison, the CH-R definitely has an edge over the UX if edgier styling is your thing.

If not, then the Lexus UX’s styling still sets itself apart from the rest. So much so, that some onlookers may still randomly ask you, “What kind of car is that?”

If you want more power, then the Lexus UX 200 is the way to go

To be clear, neither of these cars are pocket rockets, no matter what their looks entail. Both of them are powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. However, the Lexus puts out 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque compared to the CH-R’s output of 144 and 139, respectively. They even have the same curb weight of 3,300 pounds. So, what does that translate to in terms of performance?

According to Car and Driver’s testing of each, the Lexus UX was able to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 8.6 seconds while the CH-R took 11 seconds. What does that translate to?

In my real-world testing, I had no issues getting up to highway speeds, passing slower cars, or going uphill in the UX. It wasn’t fast, by any means, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it slow. Although, I feel like the CVT that’s connected to the engine bogged things down a little, especially at tip-in.

In contrast, the CH-R had me sweating bullets making the same maneuvers. I felt like I had to plan my highway merges to allow for the extra time it would take to get up to speed. Also, there would be times on the highway when I would see an opening ahead in the next lane, but if I didn’t have enough time to speed up, then it would be gone. The lack of power is a bit of a hindrance on some driving occasions.

The fuel economy difference between these two cars is surprising

According to the EPA, the 2022 Lexus UX 200 is rated at 29 city/37 highway mpg and the 2022 CH-R is rated at 21/31, respectively. That’s surprising, considering they both weigh the same and have the same engine. What’s interesting, though, is that I achieved an average of 30 mpg in both cars under mixed driving conditions.

But if you’re looking for better fuel economy, technically the UX is the better choice.

It should come as no surprise that the Lexus UX is a far better choice when it comes to interior quality. There are leather seats that are heated and ventilated, soft-touch materials everywhere, and all of the tech-savvy features you would need. The CH-R’s interior is not a bad place to be either, but you can’t beat the plushness of a Lexus. Period.

Which small crossover is the better choice?

If you can afford the starting price of $34,525 for the Lexus UX 200, then I think you would be happy with that choice. However, if you would rather spend $10,000 less, then the Toyota CH-R is still a worthy choice. Although, for my money, I would probably go with a competitor like the Honda HR-V or the Nissan Kicks. As far as this comparison goes, the Lexus still reigns supreme.
