“You plug it in. It charges you.” That’s the slogan Mazda has decided to run with for the new MX-30 EV campaign. What is new with the 2022 Mazda MX-30 electric vehicle? It is finally hitting dealerships with a plug-in hybrid version not far behind.

Mazda didn’t take too many risks when it came to the design of the MX-30. While some automakers want electric vehicles to make it clear the car is electric, the new SUV takes design queues from the regular internal combustion engine (ICE) SUVs. With that in mind, Mazda also focused on the needs of the customer.

The Mazda SUV was designed with the idea that most American drivers only have about a 30 mile a day commute. The EPA-estimated range for the MX-30 is around 100 miles on a full charge, which is plenty of range for those simply going back and forth to work. However, is that range going to be too short for some potential buyers?

On the bright side, Mazda says that the EV is eligible for California’s High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) decal. This allows drivers access to the HOV lane, even if the driver is alone in the SUV. Not a bad perk.

Mazda wants the 2022 MX-30 to be simple

The Mazda MX-30 is defined as “charging made simple.” A Level 3 DC-Fast Charger can get the MX-30 from 20% State of Charge (SoC) to 80% SoC in under 40 minutes. In addition to that, the included Level 1 120V charger gets the job done.

Mazda also partnered with ChargePoint to offer convenient electric vehicle charging. Each Mazda MX-30 comes with a $500 credit toward charging, which can also be applied to a home charger.

Since Mazda is relatively new to the EV game, the MX-30 is still eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. Those rebates could change in the future, but buyers can still take advantage of the offer for now.

The electric vehicle SUV is available in California

The MX-30 battery comes with an eight-year warranty. In addition to the EV, the plug-in hybrid version should be rolling out soon. Mazda says this option comes with a rotary generator to charge the battery, offering even more range and flexibility.

As it stands now, the 2022 MX-30 starts at $33,470. Right now, the electric vehicle is only available in California. The Premium Plus trim starts at $36,480. Pricing for the plug-in hybrid option has not been released yet but is expected to hit the road sometime early next year. Will the 100-mile range make the 2022 Mazda MX-30 less popular than similar SUVs? That is to be determined.
