2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS Wins MotorBiscuit’s Best Driving Experience of the Year
When you think of a car that will give you the best driving experience, what comes to mind? A visceral sports car with a loud V8 engine? Or maybe a fuel-saving hybrid that won’t make you cry at the pump? Either way, you probably wouldn’t consider a full-size electric sedan as we did. We picked the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS as the winner of MotorBiscuit’s Best Driving Experience of the Year for 2022. Here is why.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS makes you feel like you’re sitting in the lap of luxury
First off, we have to admit that the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS doesn’t have the most eye-pleasing exterior aesthetics. Its aerodynamic shape is more functional than fierce. However, take a seat in it, and you will feel like you’re sitting in the literal lap of luxury. The seats are swathed in fine leather, and the headrests have little pillows so you can comfortably rest your head.
All of the controls are within easy reach. And if you want the car to do certain functions without having to touch anything, simply say, “Hey, Mercedes!” and give a command. Its tech features are on point.
Our EQS test car was equipped with the Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen, which is a 56-inch panel comprised of three different screens. The screen in front of the passenger allows them to toggle through maps and menus, while the one for the driver displays pertinent vehicle information. The middle screen is for the infotainment controls, which include sub-menus for the vehicle settings, comfort controls, and apps.
Our favorite menu was the comfort category, which included the seat massage function for the driver and passenger. In the apps menu, there is the option to play Tetris and other games to keep you busy while you wait for the car to charge.
Speaking of charging, our EQS test car charged quickly when using a public level 2 charger. We were able to get the charge up to 90% from 30% in about 40 minutes. Fortunately, the built-in games in the infotainment system kept us occupied.
The Mercedes EQS gives a serene and powerful driving experience
When it comes to driving the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS, the experience is like no other. Since the EQS is based on the S-Class sedan, you can bet that its ride is super soft and comfortable. The cabin noise is minimal, and even when you’re driving at higher speeds, you feel separated from the outside world – it’s that quiet.
It’s the same for the all-electric powertrain. The dual-motor setup powers the car without making a noise. In fact, the only noise you hear is the Star-Trek-like beaming sounds coming out of the speakers. The sounds get louder as you bury the pedal, and they’re quite the novelty, but they add to the whole experience.
Now, as far as the EQS’ power, let’s just say that it’s intoxicating. We tested the EQS 450+ and the AMG EQS this year and were blown away by both. The EQS 450 pumps out 329 hp, which is enough power to make you smile when you stab the throttle. The AMG EQS, on the other hand, puts you in control of 649 hp.
With that kind of power, accelerating from a stop shoves you back in your seat as you watch the speedometer rack up numbers in a matter of seconds – 60 mph comes in only 3.4 of them. If there are passengers in the car, you can count on them shouting and possibly screaming obscenities, but in a good way.
Ultimately, driving the Mercedes-AMG EQS is like being catapulted at the start of a roller coaster ride, only you’re sitting on a leather couch enclosed in a comfortable tomb.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS is the winner of the “Best Driving Experience” of the year
While we had the honor to test out many vehicles this year, we chose the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS as the best driving experience. Although some of the cars we tested were fast and fun to drive, while others were comfortable and superbly fuel-efficient, the EQS stood out to us the most.
At the end of the day (or year), the Mercedes-Benz EQS neatly blends unrivaled comfort, intelligent technology, and unrelenting power into a luxurious full-size sedan. With all of these factors taken into account, the editors at MotorBiscuit are honored to award the EQS with the Best Driving Experience of the year for 2022.
