2022 G-Class Already Has a Stop-Drive Order and Recall
We’re barely into the lifecycle of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the G-Wagen, and there’s already a pretty dire recall. Only two years after its introduction, Mercedes-Benz has urged AMG G63 4×4 Squared owners to not drive their SUVs until the recall has been addressed.
2022 AMG G63 4×4 Squared rear differential housing may break
According to Cars.com, Mercedes-Benz issued a recall on the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class regarding a specific trim package’s rear differential. The recall states that AMG 63 4×4 squared models may develop cracks in their rear differential casings which can lead to leaks. There’s also a risk that the differential housing may completely break. This case would render the SUV undrivable. Cars.com says that owners should not drive their 2022 G-Class SUVs if they are under the recall notice.
The rear differential is paramount to the operation of any 2022 G-Class model. They’re traditional, rear-wheel drive SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler or new Ford Bronco. The transmission connects to a driveshaft that carries power back to the rear axle. There, the power goes through the rear differential – gears that transfer power in either direction to the rear wheels. Without a functional differential, the 2022 G-Class can’t move.
How to check if your 2022 G-Class has a recall
This recall doesn’t affect all 2022 G-Calls models – just the AMG 63 4×4 Squared. If you’re unsure, it’s pretty easy to check online whether your G-Class is among those affected.
First, you can always check the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) website. As long as you have your vehicle identification number (VIN), you can search and see any and all current recalls for your vehicle.
You can also check the Mercedes-Benz website. The brand itself has a VIN search function to see current recalls – just the NHTSA.
Fortunately, certified Mercedes-Benz service centers will inspect and fix each affected 2022 G-Class upon arrival at no charge.
What is the AMG 63 4×4 Squared?
The Mercedes-AMG 63 4×4 Squared is a high-trim version of the 2022 G-Class with more power, more features, and a higher price tag. According to MotorTrend, the SUV has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 making 577 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque that propels it from zero to 60 mph in about five seconds.
But the most significant difference between the AMG and the lesser 2022 G-Class models is in its differentials – the very component affected by the recall. MotorTrend reports that the model uses a portal axle instead of a conventional one, allowing for more ground clearance and even better off-road capability.
The AMG 63 4×4 Squared also has a price tag to make the eyes water. MSRP starts at well over $200,000. At that price, one might hope their unicorn SUV could go more than a year or two without a stop-drive order. C’est la vie.
