The Nissan Frontier was once one of the oldest new mid-size trucks on the market. But for 2022, it has finally entered a new generation. With the third generation, buyers will get a more refined ride, modern features, and a standard V6 engine that provides ample power. However, there is one slightly disappointing change that Nissan has made for this pickup truck. It can no longer come equipped with a manual transmission, which means that the autobox is now the only option. 

Does the 2022 Nissan Frontier have a manual transmission?

Unfortunately, Nissan has ditched the manual for the Frontier truck in 2022. Because of this, buyers must rely on a single transmission option. While the majority of new car sales are vehicles that feature an automatic, having the option for a manual is always appreciated. Especially considering the fact that the Toyota Tacoma still has a manual transmission as a mid-size truck. 

We do appreciate the fact that Nissan has not given the 2022 Frontier a CVT (continuously variable transmission,) as sometimes that kind of transmission can be finicky.

What engine does the Nissan Frontier have?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier comes with a single engine option, a 3.8-liter V6. Because of that, buyers will get a standard V6 engine on this truck. In terms of power, the Frontier’s engine makes 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. And that should be ample performance for most typical needs. Especially when things like four-wheel drive are considered.

When it comes time to tow or haul, the Frontier is also an impressive truck. When properly equipped, this vehicle can tow up to 6,720 lbs. Nissan’s mid-size truck can also haul up to 1,610 lbs when in the proper configuration.

Should you buy the new Frontier?

If you are interested in a new mid-size truck, the 2022 Frontier makes for an ideal pickup. It comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but 4WD is available for more capability. Better yet, this truck also boasts a standard V6 engine, and that is something that other manufacturers may make you pay extra for. Additionally, the MSRP for the 2022 Nissan Frontier is $28,690, which helps to make it more affordable.

This vehicle is also available in a variety of trim levels, including the PRO-4X model. When equipped with this package, buyers will be getting a truck that is ready to handle off-road situations. Plus, it boasts more aggressive looks over the standard Nissan Frontier truck.

Is the Nissan Frontier better than the Toyota Tacoma?

Perhaps the biggest competitor for the Frontier is the Tacoma, and the Nissan does outshine the Toyota in a few key ways. Where the 2022 Tacoma features a standard four-cylinder engine, the 2022 Frontier has a V6 as standard fare. The Frontier can almost tow identical weights to the Tacoma and according to Car and Driver, it has a spacious interior.

That said, the Tacoma does feel like less of an old-school truck and more of a modern option. But for those who want a straightforward truck, the Frontier is likely the better mid-size truck.
