For 2022, Nissan has introduced the third generation of the Frontier. Because of this, a number of updates have been made. Making this a truly ideal mid-size truck. There is still a range of trim levels available. Including the top-level PRO-4X model. But not every new Frontier comes quite as well equipped. And that is especially true for the base S model. Which is a truly basic new truck.

Looking for a simple truck? The 2022 Nissan Frontier S is it

Coming in at under $30,000, you can’t blame the Frontier S for being an old-school truck. Things like fog lights must be optioned on. The interior seating material is basic cloth, additionally, the steering wheel is basic rubber. Which is ideal for those shopping for a work truck or something that they aren’t afraid to get dirty.

Where the new Frontier shines is the fact that each model comes standard with a V6 engine. This engine makes 310 horsepower and 281 pound-foot of torque, according to Car and Driver. This gives certain configurations of the Nissan S to tow up to 6,720 pounds. 

Despite some of the more basic features, the Nissan Frontier S still comes equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen. This provides owners with Apple CarPlay connectivity. 

Does the base Nissan Frontier offer four-wheel drive?

The Nissan Frontier does come standard with rear-wheel drive. But for those who want 4WD capability, the Frontier S can be outfitted with a 4WD system. Additional capabilities include hill start assist and hill descent control. When equipped with 4WD, the Nissan Frontier S can tow up to 6,510 lbs. 

Does the 2022 Nissan Frontier have a manual transmission?

Unfortunately, with the new V6 engine, the Nissan Frontier no longer features a manual transmission. To get a mid-size truck that has a standard transmission, buyers will have to opt for the more expensive Toyota Tacoma or Jeep Gladiator. 

The 2022 Frontier does offer a nine-speed transmission. Which ensures smooth delivery of power and ideal gear ratios.

Why should you buy the 2022 Nissan Frontier?

With its unique value proposition and standard V6 engine, the Nissan Frontier is a good mid-size truck for a variety of roles. For those in search of a full-size offer, Nissan still sells the Titan. Which is the Frontier’s bigger sibling.

Better yet, the Frontier does offer modern safety features. These include things like blind-spot warning and lane departure warning. Because of this, the Frontier adds a level of driver confidence. Additional safety features that can be opted for include adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera. Of course, for these features, buyers will have to climb to higher trim levels over the base S model. 

If you are shopping for a mid-size truck that is capable of going off-road, the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is a cheaper alternative to the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. Features like an electronic locking rear differential and off-road-tuned shocks make this a truck that is ready to go just about anywhere. 

For those who just need the utility of a truck with none of the frills, the 2022 Nissan Frontier S is the answer.
