Off-roading. You probably thought a lot about lifted trucks, Jeeps, and maybe the Rivian R1T when you read that. Obviously, big SUVs and trucks are well-suited to off-road work. However, the 2022 Porsche Taycan CrossTurismo isn’t just a mouthful, it’s a legitimate alternative for light off-roading. No, it’s not everyone’s first choice, but maybe it should be.

Recently, Car and Driver took the CrossTurismo up Ophir Pass in Colorado. The pass is something of a landmark for off-roaders in the state and it seems an obvious choice for testing the off-road chops of Porsche’s lifted wagon. However, lifted should be used lightly with the Taycan. The real lift here is only an inch or so, with the black body cladding doing a lot of visual work to make the CrossTurismo look higher.

That said, the 2022 Porsche Taycan CrossTurismo cures many of the pain points that off-road enthusiasts are constantly at war with. Dual electric motors mean torque is no issue, and EV power means no losses in horses at altitude (which there’s a lot of in CO). Then there’s the kicker: all-terrain tires fitted for the adventure.

As any seasoned off-roader will tell you, that’s what makes the biggest difference. Just like at the race track, proper grip by way of tires is everything, especially when you’re trying not to slide off a cliff. In the end, the CrossTurismo made it up and down Ophir without much issue, though there were surely some browner pants by the time the sun set. What was proved ends up being far more interesting than the journey.

Price and badges aside, it’s hard to look at the 2022 Porsche Taycan CrossTurismo and see an off-roader. While it’s probably only a matter of time before baging yours up off-road on a similar pass, it’s hard to argue with the potential here. Based on C&D’s account, the Taycan CrossTurismo would make the perfect weekend camping tool, especially with some A/T tires and a roof tent. The CrossTurismo sounds perfect for dirt roads where you need just a little more clearance.

How much is the Taycan?

To bring price back into things, the 2022 Taycan in any form is an expensive daily driver, and an even more expensive weekend camping tool. However, range is solid at 202 miles and pricing starts at $93,700 for the CrossTurismo, after all. That number is rapidly approaching a kitted-out Rivian R1T or S, both of which top out around $100,000. However, you are getting something you’re almost guaranteed to never see on a trail. And that’s something you really can’t put a price on.
