2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Charges the 4S With a Turbo Boost
The base Porsche Taycan trims might be more fun to drive, but it’s hard to ignore the Turbo trims’ performance. However, crossing the speed gap between the different versions of Porsche’s electric sedan doesn’t come cheap. And not everyone necessarily needs or can handle an EV as fast as the Taycan Turbo. Fortunately, there’s now a solution: the 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS.
How to make a 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS: take the 4S and add some Turbo-style goodies
The GTS trim is a familiar sight for Porsche fans, though this is the first time the Taycan is getting it. As in the 911, Macan, and Cayenne, the GTS is one rung below the Turbo on the Taycan ladder. But while it’s not the Turbo, the GTS does have some of its features—plus a bit of style all its own.
Some of the 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS’s specific touches are subtle. For example, while it has the same braking hardware as the Taycan 4S, its front rotors are larger, Car and Driver reports. The GTS also has a more aggressive front fascia and side skirts, as well as a different rear diffuser. That diffuser, along with the headlight surrounds, side window trim, side skirts, and ‘GTS’ badging, is blacked-out. So is the GTS-specific aluminum interior trim and kick plates.
Other 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS features, though, are a bit more dramatic. For instance, those larger rotors now hide behind matte-black versions of the Taycan Turbo S’s wheels. The interior also features more suede-like material on the headliner, steering wheel, and seats, Car and Driver notes. And if you get the optional GTS Interior Package, your Taycan gets contrasting red or gray interior elements as well as plenty of carbon-fiber trim.
But you can’t really see the biggest differences between the 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS and the 4S. At least, not until you put your foot down.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS might be “the performance sweet spot,” The Drive says
2022 Porsche Taycan GTS | Porsche Taycan 4S (standard battery) | Porsche Taycan Turbo | |
Horsepower | 509 hp | 429 hp | 616 hp |
Launch control horsepower | 529 hp | 522 hp | 670 hp |
Torque | 626 lb-ft | 472 lb-ft | 626 lb-ft |
0-60 mph time | 3.5 seconds | 3.8 seconds | 3.1 seconds |
Gross battery capacity | 93.4 kWh | 79.2 kWh | 93.4 kWh |
Estimated range | TBD | 227 miles | 212 miles |
Curb weight | 5077 lbs | 4773 lbs | 5119 lbs |
Price | $132,750 | $105,150 | $152,250 |
Porsche doesn’t just give its GTS models some flair from the more expensive Turbo models. Whether you’re talking about the Cayenne or the 911, the GTS also comes with a performance boost over the lower trims. Plus, because it bundles several desirable performance features as standard for a lower total upcharge, too, it’s often considered “the perfect middle ground,” The Drive notes. And so it goes with the 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS.
For one, while the 93.4-kWh battery is optional on the 4S, Porsche makes it standard on the Taycan GTS. But even with the bigger battery, the Taycan 4S is less powerful than the GTS. And the GTS is likely even faster than Porsche estimates. Case in point, Car and Driver recorded a 3.4-second 0-60 mph time for the 4S. Therefore, don’t be surprised if the new trim ends up hitting 60 mph in three seconds.
Porsche doesn’t give the 2022 Taycan GTS all the Turbo’s and Turbo S’s performance features. So, if you want carbon-ceramic brakes, rear-wheel steering, or active anti-roll bars, those cost extra. However, the GTS does have the Turbo’s active air suspension and torque-vectoring rear—but with GTS-specific tuning. Also, Porsche includes the Sport Chrono Package, complete with extra driving modes, a multi-function steering wheel, and dash-mounted stopwatches.
When will the new version of Porsche’s electric sedan be available?
As of this writing, Porsche hasn’t released the official EPA range estimate for the 2022 Taycan GTS. But given that other Taycans regularly beat their range estimates, it’s safe to say that the GTs can likely go 200 miles on a charge. However, the official claims should go live closer to the GTS’s US arrival.
That arrival is currently scheduled for Q2 2022. If you want one, though, dealers are already taken orders. So, if you want this Taycan performance sweet spot, you might want to get in line.
