The Ram 1500 TRX was launched in 2021. It became the Ram brand’s flagship all-terrain truck with a heightened performance that could finally rival the F-150 Raptor’s off-road dominance. In 2022, Ram launched the 1500 in seven trim levels, including the Tradesman, Big Horn, Rebel, Laramie, Longhorn, Limited, and TRX. A special edition model called the TRX Ignition Edition also made its debut, with a distinct orange paint job, a Level 2 Equipment package, and a whopping $20,000 price difference between the Ignition Edition and the standard TRX. 

Off-road performance that beats the Ram 1500 hands down

There are reasons why even the base Ram 1500 doesn’t come close to the TRX. While it comes with wider fender flares and game-changing off-road suspension, the distinctive feature of the Ram 1500 TRX is its 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that delivers 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to zoom from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. 

Ram Trucks designed the Ram 1500 in two four-door cab configurations:  the crew cab and the quad cab. They both feature backseats, but the former provides more legroom and two short-bed options, one measuring 5 feet 7 inches and another 6 feet 4 inches. If you opt for a long-bed truck, it would be best to choose the quad cab. Additionally, the truck has a front-wheel-drive standard. 

On the other hand, the Ram 1500 TRX comes standard with 4WD and all the bells and whistles of the Limited edition. However, it adds flared fenders, an upgraded engine cooling system, underbody skid plates, 35-inch all-terrain tires, high-performance suspension with Bilstein adaptive shocks, and electrically-powered locking rear differential, making it the ultimate off-road monster. 

The 2022 Ram 1500 TRX Ignition Edition flagship features

As noted on Car and Driver, Ram released the 2022 1500 TRX Ignition Edition series, sporting an eye-catching citrus orange color that extends to the interior. Compared to the 702 models of the 2021 TRX, the new orange truck is also a limited edition model. Only 875 702-hp off-road pickup trucks were released with a starting price of $93,280.

The standard TRX entered the truck market with the Launch Edition, priced at $92,010. It came with a special-edition-exclusive Anvil Gray paint. According to Motor Trend, the model sold out in less than three hours. Surprisingly, the original model off the line sold for $410,000 at Barrett-Jackson. That demonstrated just how much shoppers eagerly awaited its release. 

The Ignition Edition adds a convenience and appearance package for $9,200. There’s also the Level 2 Equipment package adding $9,995 to the pricing. It comes with cooled front-row and second-row seats, leather flat-bottom steering wheel, deployable bed-step, a head-up display system, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, pedestrian emergency braking, an LED third brake light, and other niceties. 

Ignition Edition vs. the Standard TRX: Price wars

Although the Launch Edition came close to the Ignition Edition’s price tag, the standard TRX was the top Ram 1500 trim following the model’s release onto the market in 2021, alongside the other six trims. It cost $73,480, considering its premium off-road credentials compared to the rest of the pack. 

The Ram 1500 TRX Ignition Edition will begin selling at the end of 2022. With only 875 models on offer and unrivaled off-road performance, Ram stuck a $93,280 price tag to it, which is almost $20,000 more than the 2021 TRX MSRP. But the hike in price certainly sent ripples among in-market shoppers, with many asking whether the upgrades are worth the cost difference.

It surely is an astonishing price increase, considering both models come with similar standard features, including 18-inch wheels, 6.2-liter supercharged V8, a suspension with Bilstein adaptive dampers, 4WD, and more. The only difference seems to be the Ignition orange color and the Level 2 package available as an optional feature. A color change may not be enough to warrant a $20,000 spike in price.
