The 2022 Rivian R1T is the first mass-produced electric truck to hit American streets. The startup backed by Amazon and Ford is sure to make a big splash in the automotive industry. Here’s why the Rivian R1T is in a lane of its own.

The 2022 Rivian R1T is targeting a niche market

Today, top automakers identify the target audience of their product when developing a market strategy. The information released about the R1T’s capabilities makes its purpose obvious. It performs well in the city, but this truck shines in the great outdoors.

Like the Toyota Tacoma, the Rivian R1T’s design makes it perfect for drivers who take their vehicles off the beaten path. Vehicles with off-roading capability like the Tacoma have become increasingly popular over the years. The Rivian R1T is marketed as a truck that is well-suited for driving on trails and camping.

According to CNN Business, the Rivian R1T is ideal for “glamping”, a form of camping that’s much more convenient and can involve tech. The R1T is for the modern outdoorsman and families who want to enjoy nature comfortably.

The R1T is offered with an Adventure Gear package that transforms the electric truck into the perfect camping Swiss Army Knife. The Adventure Gear Package adds a slide-out kitchen, bed-mounted rooftop tent, and plenty of other convenient glamping accessories. The 2022 Rivian R1T with the Adventure Gear package starts at around $72,000.

The 2022 Rivian R1T starts at around $68,000. Its pricing indicates that the R1T was never designed for the average Joe who likes an occasional trail run or camping trip. Even the Toyota Tacoma’s most expensive off-road trim is still over $20,000 cheaper than the R1T.

The R1T is designed for the affluent, who adventure religiously instead of casually. What’s an extra $5,000 for an adventure package to those willing to pay $68,000 for a pickup truck.

Unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivian R1T isn’t trying to sell trucks to the average American. Both the F-150 Lighting and Tesla Cybertruck are much more affordable. The R1T is made for those pursuing the finer things in life.

Amazon and Ford believe in Rivian’s vision

Ford is one of the oldest, most popular American automakers in history. Amazon is one of the most successful American companies in history. If these two companies believe in Rivian, it has a fair chance at doing extraordinarily well at selling electric trucks to its target audience. Is Rivian destined to change the automotive industry with the introduction of its new electric truck?
