If you want a diesel SUV, you’re running out of time. With electric and hybrid vehicles gaining in popularity and all car manufacturers designing and producing electric versions of their most popular SUVs and trucks (and creating all new ones, too), there isn’t a lot of demand for diesel SUVs anymore. These are the 2022 diesel SUVs you can choose from.

What SUVs offer diesel engines?

There are few diesel SUVs left on the market, but most major automakers do still have some offerings. Chevy and GMC both have diesel SUV sibling-competitors and Jeep offers the Wrangler and possibly the upcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Also from GM is the diesel Cadillac. According to Cars.com there are rumors of a potential diesel Ford Bronco and Ford Expedition, but it’s far from reality and the changing automotive climate makes this increasingly unlikely.

What large SUVs come in diesel?

Most diesel SUVs these days are full-size SUVs. Chevrolet offers the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban. GMC has the 2022 GMC Yukon and the 2022 Yukon XL. And of course GM wouldn’t leave Cadillac out – the 2022 Cadillac Escalade and 2022 Escalade ESV have available diesel options as well.

All six of these large SUVs share the same engine. It’s a turbodiesel 3.0-liter inline-six engine. This makes 277 hp and 460. It’s the same engine that’s found in the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. This engine improves fuel economy. Cars.com uses the Escalade as an example of this – the diesel Escalade gets 22 mpg with the diesel AWD and 23 mpg with the diesel 4WD engine. The Escalade’s gas-powered V8 engine only gets 16 mpg.

The 2022 Wrangler can also come with a diesel engine

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler can come with a diesel 3.0-liter V6 engine that makes 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. This engine is also more efficient than the regular gas-powered Wrangler, with the exception of the Wrangle 4xe. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is part of Jeep’s new hybrid powertrain lineup, and it gets an extra 21 mpg over the fuel-powered Wranglers. The diesel Jeep Wrangler price starts at $40,065.

It’s also possible that Stellantis will be putting out a diesel Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer, though similar to a diesel Ford Expedition and Bronco, this isn’t confirmed – and it may not even make sense to do.

What is the most efficient diesel 2022 SUV?

The most fuel-efficient diesel 2022 SUV is the Jeep Wrangler. It gets 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. While this is impressive, it still isn’t quite as great as the Wrangler 4xe, but if you really want a diesel engine SUV, the Wrangler gets the best fuel economy.

The large diesel SUVs from GM all have roughly the same fuel economy. The 2022 Chevy Suburban, 2022 Cadillac Escalade, 2022 GMC Yukon all get 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The 2022 Chevy Tahoe with a diesel engine gets 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

If you want an SUV with a diesel engine, you’re going to have to act quickly. Diesel is on its way out, and while you still have the opportunity to get one, the availability of diesel engines is dwindling.
