The agile Subaru BRZ coupe was completely redesigned for the 2022 model year. While there are plenty of upgrades, one thing hasn’t changed: there are still only two 2022 BRZ trim levels available in the lineup. The powertrain options and performance specs for both all-new models are the same, but they differ in overall features and price.

The all-new 2022 Subaru BRZ is so popular that you may not be able to order one at the moment. You’ll need to either get lucky at a dealership or wait patiently for the 2023 model. Why not spend this time researching? Since this coupe was just redesigned, we shouldn’t expect too many changes for next year’s model. Check out the available 2022 Subaru BRZ trim levels, explained here.

Do any Subaru BRZ trim levels offer all-wheel drive?

Let’s address this tidbit before we jump into explaining the BRZ trim levels. The 2022 Subaru BRZ does not offer the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive on any of its current models, preferring to stay true to sporty specs with a rear-wheel drivetrain.

The new 2022 BRZ is the first model in the second generation, which leaves the potential for an all-wheel drive Subaru BRZ in the future. But, it’s not looking likely at this time. If AWD is on your must-haves list, there are plenty of all-wheel alternatives to consider.

2022 Subaru BRZ Premium: the best new sports car under $30,000?

Starting at $27,995

Here’s a look at quick specs for the 2022 BRZ Premium:

  • Standard STARLINK infotainment with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™
  • Keyless access
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • 228-horsepower 2.4-liter BOXER engine (up to 30 mpg highway)
  • Standard 6-speed manual transmission

There is a 6-speed automatic transmission available on the 2022 Subaru BRZ, but you’ll be scolded for choosing it with a $1,600 upcharge.

There is no BRZ Base trim level available in this coupe’s lineup, so the Premium is going to be the cheapest BRZ that you can get your hands on. Whether you’ll be able to find one at MSRP at a local dealership, though, is another story.

2022 Subaru BRZ Limited: the luxury trim level option for Subaru’s compact coupe

Starting at $30,495

The all-new 2022 BRZ Limited takes what’s great about the BRZ Premium and adds a sprinkle of favorite features:

  • Leather- and Ultrasuede®-trimmed upholstery
  • 18-inch wheels with a matte dark gray finish
  • Heated front seats
  • Steering-responsive headlights
  • 8-speaker sound system
  • Enhanced safety features

Like the BRZ Premium, the BRZ Limited comes standard with a manual transmission and can be equipped with an automatic for the right price. It features the same 228-horsepower engine—a welcome improvement over the last MY’s 205 horsepower.

Subaru BRZ Premium vs. Limited: is it worth the upgrade?

With a price difference of less than $3,000, it could be well worth the money to upgrade to the BRZ Limited vs the BRZ Premium. You’ll still get all the same impressive performance specs as the less-expensive model, but with some quality comfort features.

To the greater question of whether or not the 2022 Subaru BRZ deserves to tout its place as a true car, it’s worth mentioning that the all-new BRZ was a finalist in Road & Track’s Performance Car of the Year competition. This spirited little coupe went head-to-head with the likes of BMW, Porsche, and Lamborghini. That speaks volumes for the power, handling, and all-around enjoyment of the BRZ, no matter which trim level you choose.
