  • The 2022 Subaru WRX arrives with a host of changes
  • How many of those changes will carry over to the STI?
  • When we can expect a 2022 STI

Subaru recently unveiled the 2022 Subaru WRX. With it comes a host of new changes, some more controversial than others, and many, many questions. Chief among those is that of Subaru’s new STI. Obviously, many components are traditionally shared between the two, with the STI getting some special sauce the new WRX just won’t.

What’s up with the new WRX?

We’ll start with the base ‘Rex. Well, it’s not really a base car now, is it? After all, a Subaru WRX is a turned-up version of the brand’s pedestrian Subaru Impreza sedan. Headline figures are promising for the STI version, with power in the 2022 ‘Rex up to 271 hp and 258 lb-ft. It’s also important to note that the 2.4L mill in the new car is, well, new.

Also new is the body cladding. Some people hate it, but it certainly tricks your eyes into thinking the car is now much higher than the last generation. In truth, ride heights are roughly similar. Finally, there’s also the return of the manual transmission and a brand new automatic option for the slightly softer GT-spec car.

Big changes for the ‘Rex mean big changes for the STI

How much of these changes will be improved upon or altered for the STI model remain somewhat of a mystery. However, the last generation of Subaru WRX and STI models offers some insight. Perhaps the most notable of which is a big ol’ wing. It’s a hallmark of the STI badge, and almost certainly will make an appearance for the 2022 car, and the story is likely the same for the body cladding. Then there’s the engine.

271 hp is no number to turn one’s nose up at, and the new STI will certainly have to make more. We expect north of 300 hp. That places the new Subaru WRX STI in direct competition with the Honda Civic Type R. Given the AWD system Subaru is now famous for, the STI will also likely feature some updates to that. New cars have to be faster than old ones after all.

How much will the 2022 Subaru WRX cost?

That brings us to price. Unfortunately, there’s no official pricing on either the Subaru WRX or the STI version. However, given pricing from the current models, expect roughly $29,999 and $39,999 respectively. Neither model is particularly expensive, but nor are they impressively cheap either. The budged for go-fast bits has to come from somewhere. Let’s just hope the 2022 Subaru WRX STI is worth it.
