What’s better than rally-bred, manual transmisson, AWD, affordable, fun, JDM sauce? Well, rally-bred, manual transmisson, AWD, affordable, fun, JDM wagons of course! Knowing this, the kind folks at Subaru decided to create just that. Again. Meet the 2022 Subaru WRX Sportwagon. Oh, you can’t buy one. We’ll give you three guesses why.

Subaru makes a WRX wagon for Australia

Yep. The boys and girls down under win this round. Like with just about everything cool and Japanese Domestic Market, this long roof WRX isn’t for US shores. This one, like the WRX wagon is built on exactly the same platform at the 2022 Subaru WRX we’ll be getting here. Wheelbase? Same. Engine? Also same, albiet built for Australian emissions targets. That means 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Remember that bit about fun, manual transmission JDM wagons? That was sort of a lie, as the Sportwagon only gets the CVT offered in the WRX S4 (more JDM stuff we can’t touch) and the WRX GT. That gearbox is an “8-speed” continuously variable transmission that drives all four wheels. Despite the obviously absent stick shift, it’s a shame we can’t get our hands on one, as it’s been a looong time since we’ve had ‘Rex wagon (or hatchback if you want to have that fight) Stateside.

What was the last year of the WRX wagon?

If we’re being specific, the last time we had a Subaru WRX wagon was seven years ago, back in 2014. Despite people’s somewhat rose-tited perceptions of that generation of WRX and STI, the initial reception from the media was somewhat icy, owning largely to poor handling. Plus, those wagon (or hatchback) models just didn’t sell well here in the States. In all likelihood, a combination of those factors resulted in the demise of the long roof ‘Rex in America.

Back to the 2022 Subaru WRX Sportwagon. Outside of the details mentioned above, information on this JDM long roof is rather slim. The shots you see here are the only images we have (though there could be more buried on Subie’s awful global media site), and that means no interior shots of yet. Odds are, this’ll have much the same interior as the WRX S4 and GT models. Given Australia’s close ties to the JDM, we’re betting the Sportwagon will lean towards the S4’s interior and whatever minor changes that may hold.

Will there be a 2022 Subaru WRX wagon?

And as for the odds of a Stateside WRX wagon? Slim to none. If one were coming this year, we’d be willing to bet that Subaru would’ve launched it already. Everyone’s awful mad about the WRX, and perhaps a wagon version would help smooth things over here in America. Unfortunately, that’s just not likely, and if we do get a WRX wagon, it’ll have to wait for the next generation.
