Cover your wallet’s eyes. It might not recover after seeing how much the Toyota 4Runner costs. Honestly, we’re still a little shocked by how much it costs to get started with the 2022 Toyota 4Runner, but it’s time to investigate. We will see what the price hikes are about.

How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner has an MSRP of $38,105. The 2021 4Runner costs about $36,765, so there is a $1,340 price increase between model years. It’s typically not uncommon to see new model years go up in price by a few hundred bucks.

However, we aren’t sure if the 4Runner has enough updates for the model year to be worth it. Plus, the prices listed are the MSRPs. This means that they don’t include the destination fee or dealership markups.

It’s expensive compared to rivals. For example, the 2022 Ford Explorer has an MSRP of $33,745, and the 2022 Kia Telluride begins at $33,090. So, the competition is pretty attractive due to being about $5,000 cheaper.

Why is the Toyota 4Runner so expensive?

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner doesn’t seem to be doing well among critics. It keeps ranking in last place because of its age. It’s part of the fifth generation that was introduced in 2009. Newer options like the refreshed Ford Explorer and Kia Telluride feel more modern.

Critics quickly point out that the old 4Runner has a dated five-speed transmission, bumpy ride quality, and a lack of modern updates. It’s even quite thirsty and only gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and up to 19 mpg on the highway.

But fans don’t seem to mind its age. The Toyota 4Runner is still a popular option because it’s known for being reliable, long-lasting, and has a low maintenance cost. According to MotorAsk, there are 4runner models still going strong after reaching 400k miles.

Because the 4Runner is so reliable, Toyota can pair it with a high price tag without much worry. Plus, the 4Runner holds its value, so there isn’t much risk of becoming upside down with your payments.

The Toyota 4Runner will depreciate by about 39 percent after five years of ownership with a resale value of about $27,563. It ranks in the top 10 list of vehicles with the best resale value.

Plus, the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage could be impacting inventory. Limited supply and steady demand could contribute to higher prices.

Is the 2022 4Runner worth buying?

Of course, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is worth buying! It has excellent off-roading capabilities, it’s durable, it’s reliable, and it holds its value. Critics are still impressed by the number of standard features that are included and by the generous passenger and cargo space.

However, the 4Runner isn’t as refined as newer options, meaning it may have a bumpier ride and louder interior. The aging interior quality may hold the 4Runner back as well.

But competitors don’t benefit from an extremely tough ladder frame which is great for tackling challenges. The Limited trim offers adaptive dampers to improve body control, and the TRD Sport features new faux-leather upholstery.

The price of the Toyota 4Runner might be a little shocking, but it seems to be worth it. However, the 4Runner is pretty outdated, so the price tag doesn’t seem to match its value at first glance.
